What Customers Are Saying
Customers report widespread dissatisfaction with this rat trap, citing a trigger mechanism that fails to activate even when bait is consumed, allowing rats to steal food without setting it off. Many describe the trap as extremely difficult and dangerous to set, requiring 10 to 15 minutes and risking finger injuries from the heavy spring. Reviewers frequently compare it unfavorably to competitor brands, calling it unreliable and poor quality. A small number report successful catches and praise the sturdy construction, but these positive experiences are vastly outnumbered by complaints of ineffectiveness and poor design.

Would Not RecommendBought 10 traps, setup as recommended used peanut butter as bait. 2 night in a row all the traps were licked clean. Not one was tripped or caught rat.

Doesn't do the job
Would Not RecommendI should have read the other reviews before buying these. They should call these “rat feeders” not “rat traps.” I’ve had great success with Victor traps before, but the Tomcat brand where the only ones available at Lowes so I got these instead. Ironically, materials and construction of the Tomcat traps appear to be of a higher quality than that of the Victor, but I think this actually contributes to the ineffectiveness of these traps because the Tomcat trap trigger requires more effort to spring...
Does Not work!
Would Not RecommendI have baited this trap several times and placed between poison bait containers in a confined space (sailboat). The bait on the trap is gone and all the poison bait containers are empty with rat droppings all over the place. The bait will not spring closed. The trigger mechanism is simply not effective and does not work.

We're troubled to hear of your experience with our TomCat Rat Trap. This is obviously not what we want you to expect with our traps. We aren't sure wh...
Does not work as advertised
Would Not RecommendOverall rating low because these traps, and the similar smaller mouse traps don't catch rats/mice. What good is quality and value if the traps don't catch the critters? Live in AZ and have a terrible packrat and mouse problem as I live in the desert. Been using 3 rat and 4 mouse traps for a week. Nine snaps on the rat traps...no rats. 11 snaps on the mose traps...1 mouse. Been trying fruit, cheese, meat and peanut butter. All bait gone from 80% of snapped traps. Going back to old-school dollar...

Really bad design has this product.
Would Not RecommendReally bad design has this product. Mice was able to eat all the food without triggering it for many times. Even when it did trigger, nothing got caught. The competitor Victor design is much much better which make the mice to touch the trigger paddle before it can eat the food. Try that one.
Rat Feeder
Would Not RecommendSet 3 traps, baited 2 with bacon, 1 with peanut butter. The bacon was gone on both and 1 trap was tripped but no rat. The one with peanut butter wasn't touched. Am going to replace with cheese. Don't know why the traps baited with bacon didn't work.

Waste of money.
Would Not RecommendIf you want to feed rats then get these traps. 4 different times all the food was licked clean from the trap and they didn't spring.

Impossible design
Would Not RecommendShould be very simple to set but it's impossible with this design. Curved end of pin does not fit into the raised trigger slot. The curve is not steep enough to hold the bar. Total waste of money.

Very poorly made
Would Not RecommendSpring keeps slipping off kill bar so the trap has less than half the power it should have. Also very clumsy to set compared to other brand. Poor construction makes the trap unusable. Very disappointed, especially since I bought 4 and all have the same problems. We unfortunately have been dealing with rats for some time and don't want to use poison, so I speak from experience with traps. Might have to try the new-fangled easy set model in the future.

The trap didn't work
Would Not RecommendThe trap turned out to be a rat feeding station. I set 4 traps with bait each night for 4 days. The next day the bait (peanut butter and or cheese) was licked clean and the trap was still activated. I purchased another brand of the same style trap, set 2 and caught a rat in each one the first night. The paint on the Tomcat trap was very nice though.

Absolutely not worth buying
Would Not RecommendThese are essentially rat feeders, as they're not sensitive enough to snap when rats visit them. Over the course of three weeks I set several of these in a house that I knew there was at least one rat. The bait was consistently gone, the traps never sprung. I thought I had a particularly crafty little rodent in the house, so I kept at it with these traps. Thought I'd try Victor traps, as I'd always had luck with them before. Lowe's only had these Tomcat traps, so I had to go further afield to ge...
Useless
Would Not RecommendMice just eat bait off the trap without any damage. I had a few Victor traps next to Tomcat. Victor traps always catch mice; Tomcats very rarely, if ever.
Tried and true
Would RecommendThis simple device works. I've tried many other newer gadgets that are just a waste of time and money. The only thing is that the consumer has to figure out what to bait it with. Peanut butter worked at first, but then the rats learn quick!
I thought it would work
Would Not Recommendthe trap is so secure the rat was about to eat the peanut butter, take the fruit of the trap without setting it off! even when I safety wired the fruit to the trigger! the rat was able to obtain the item without the trap going off. when setting the trap be very careful not to have your finger in the line of fire. It could hurt quite a bit. I didn't happen to me, but the thought loomed in my brain on that specific item.
Bigger is not always better
Would Not RecommendProduct broke after spring getting activated and part of metal spring malfunctioned. For a big item, maybe this product needs some more or better hardware?
Very effective for a minor problem
Would RecommendA time tested design that is very effective. We don't like poisons, prefer this method. It is constructed well enough to last for quite awhile, enough to provide value
trap doesnt work
Would Not Recommendbought two, neither worked, rats took food FOUR times and it never opened. Used an old one which worked first night.
Dinner Plate
Would Not RecommendThe rat or mouse ate the bait off the trap without ever setting the trap off.
