Next step up for me with Garmin

I had a 1030 for many years and it needed replacing so the 1040 was a logical step. I looked at the Solar and decided the battery life (35 hours) with the conventional unit was enough. It starts up really fast and all of my previous Garmin connect settings transferred automatically. Garmin support is superb.

Glad to be back with Garmin

Overall I’m very pleased, particularly with the size. The online manual is sorely lacking though. As a retired technical editor and illustrator, the manual could use a lot of help. Too much is assumed.

Solid Bike Computer Great Features

Garmin Edge 1040 is a really cool device. Nicely integrated with many other platforms, and so many training features. I am also using the Hammerhead Karoo2 and using the 1040 is a learning curve. Many of the options are layered down below several screens and menus. My biggest wish is to increase the size of the positional direction marker, or change the routing line color to a yellow or pink. The purple route line blends too easily with the surrounding streets. The position marker is very small ...

well rounded cycling computer

The Edge 1040 is full of useful features and the screen is bright enough to read in any light. The cycling telemetry this computer tracks is phenomenal.

Garmin for the win again

Great product, the touchscreen and larger display works excellent. I use this for all of my cycling activities, the customizable screens and what seems like unlimited options is great. This is the third Garmin head unit that I've owned, I still have my other two, but it was time for a feature and display upgrade. Totally worth it.

Pluses and Minuses Compared to 1030

The user interface takes some getting used to after several years with the 1030. The variable sized fonts in the data fields drove me crazy, but I have pretty much gotten use to it. The display on the 1030 was better with rounding, in most cases, to three significant numbers. The navigation, particularly when on goes off route and then returns to the route is much better. Both the 1030 and the 1040 fail to appropriately recalculate when off route--long after it is obvious that the rider is on a ...

Great unit, only one issue I don't like

My one and only issue with the unit is how they chose to define the Timer layout. I used to use a two block screen view to do the time show it would show hh:mm:ss view. Now it uses super script to display hours, and subseconds. Which is great for a single block layout. But doesn't expand to in a two block screen layout. Oh, and the hundredth seconds superscript is useless as it goes away as you pat one full second.

Great Features

I bought is a few weeks ago as an upgrade from the Garmin Edge 520 Plus. I love the touch screen and easy swipe between the various screens. The long battery life is also a great plus for me.

A solid if subtle upgrade from the 1030+

I upgraded from a line of Garmins, the last a 1030+. It is indeed a nice upgrade even if it is subtle. It is meaningfully faster to respond. The 1030 was always a bit laggy sliding pages for example and the 1040 just goes. More importantly, it gets the updated UX with bigger type faces in the boxes and just a more modern layout. Congratulations to Garmin for finally rolling new features back at least one generation. The new 1050 features that roll back (beta still but there) were the deciding fa...

Big step up

I bought this because of an altimeter problem with 1030 plus. Problem solved and so many new features. I love it.

Great Screen, Great Features, Great Battery

My Garmin cycling computer progression has gone from Edge 130, Edge 530, Edge 830, and finally Edge 1040. Obviously the 1040 is better in every aspect, but I have been blown away by how much I appreciate having a larger screen and extra battery life. I did a 12hr ride and still had over 75% battery left. The bigger screen makes for easier reading while on the bike. The gps is better than the 830. With the 830 I would always lose signal going thru a tunnel (which would stop tracking the segme...

Great for tracking ride data and navigation.

The Garmin Edge 1040 is great for tracking ride data as well as navigating routes while traveling. I like the security of knowing my wife can follow me with Live Track. And the emergency alert notification is is good for peace of mind. This can be used by a beginner with its intuitive operation. Also great for advanced riders who want all the detailed data. It is best to take a little tome to learn the functionality of the buttons and screens.

Garmin has come a long ways. Came from a 500 and 810... then after the 810 died due to a torn button and no replacement parts. I went to a wahoo elemnt... wahoo defaced and would randomly turn off. Back to Garmin with this 1040 and I'll be staying. Build quality is 10/10. Functionality is flawless. Battery life... Superior!

Great Bike Computer

Love the screen size. upgraded to the 1040 from the 530+. I have used Garmin's and the Connect App for 4 years. the ecosystem is awesome in recording data about my rides and being able to compare that data over time. the 1040 is extremely easy to use. it set up with very little effort. the ongoing use has been awesome in being able to change the screen, how well it works overall, and the maps that can be pulled up if need to check location and direction. I would highly recommend.

So much data

Switched from another brand because I'm getting old and needed a bigger screen. That part alone was worth it for me, however, this device has so much more data and the system that it displays in was great. Highly recommend this.

Upgraded from 530

If you are at that age where small fonts are difficult to see, I'd highly recommend moving to a larger display like the 1040. So much easier for me to see what is going on. Yes, it's bigger and heavier, but I am not racing, just getting exercise, and what I am wearing and carrying amount to far more than any GPS unit. The audible alerts seem louder to me, which also helps, as I use the Garmin RTL 510 (HIGHLY recommended). Battery lasts forever; most of my rides are 2-3 hours and I expect I will ...

Great Choices - Got the 1040 & Varia Radar

I bought my 1040 about a month and have used it on approximately 6 short rides around the neighborhood and at a nearby forest preserve. I am extremely happy that I chose the larger screen and didn't get the 840. I'm a purely recreational cyclist, so I really don't need all the training features of the 1040, but I wanted to get the Varia Bike Radar and wanted the largest screen available. Both the 1040 and the Varia have been amazing. The Varia picks up an approaching car 350+ feet behind me. ...
