What Customers Are Saying
The Zinsser oil-based primer appears to be an effective product for covering and sealing a variety of surfaces, including stains, wood grains, and difficult areas. Customers reported that it provides excellent coverage, adhesion, and sandability, making it suitable for use on walls, ceilings, cabinets, furniture, and exterior wood. Many found it to be a reliable and time-saving option compared to other primers or stripping methods, despite the strong odor of the oil-based formula.

Absolutely Awful Smell!!
Would Not RecommendI was recommend this by a the lowes paint department to get rid of nicotine smell in my daughters room from the previous home owner. ...this is my three year olds daughters room that now smells of straight toxic chemical and my ENTIRE HOUSE, AFTER only painting that one room and making sure it's tied off from the rest, Smells of STRAIGHT KEROSENE. I'm not usually one to leave reviews but I can't even cook without Kerosene smell or run my dryer. It's awful. I will NEVER use this again. I'm sticki...

Excellent base coat for painting
Would RecommendLiked that the product was thick, used as oil-based primer over wallpaper prior to painting. Works great.

Thickens and Dries Too Fast
Would Not RecommendI bought two gallons of Cover Stain to prime the western red cedar shakes on our 99 year old home. The paint seems to be adhering fine, but I have never used an oil-based primer that dries so quickly, too quickly for my tastes. Not as good as the Zinsser BIN shellac based type
Would Not RecommendBought to finish up a small area that I had done with Zinsser BIN because it was available in quart size. Big mistake, it didn't cover as well as BIN and it still smells two weeks after I painted with it and I have aired the room out 24/7
