What Customers Are Saying

The Zinsser oil-based primer appears to be an effective product for covering and sealing a variety of surfaces, including stains, wood grains, and difficult areas. Customers reported that it provides excellent coverage, adhesion, and sandability, making it suitable for use on walls, ceilings, cabinets, furniture, and exterior wood. Many found it to be a reliable and time-saving option compared to other primers or stripping methods, despite the strong odor of the oil-based formula.

Good coverage.

Would Recommend

Covered and sealed everything. I used disposable brush because it’s oil based. Easier cleanup. Strong odor.

Wear a mask or covering for nose and mouth.

Love the primer itself. However the intense smell it gives off is deathly.

I appreciate the cover the penetration the protection . We deal with historic properties. And when we paint new boards to match old ones its important to prime both sides 2x and especially the ends with this oil based primer. It makes the wood last 4x longer when overpainted and exposed to the elements. I tried using water and alcohol based primers. And within a few years you could see the problems starting. And a few years later. Rot. Applied correctly to BOTH SIDES OF WOODEN DECKING AND SIDIN...

Great primer

As a professional, Cover Stain has been my go to primer for interior wood work as well as exterior primer. Yes, it has an odor, but that fades quickly. The adhesion, film build, and stain blocking are second to none. Water based primers have come a long way, but if you want dependable performance Cover stain is your best bet.
