Ratings & Reviews for Minwax Antique Furniture Refinisher Oil-modified Wood refinisher ( 1-quart )
Ratings may include incentivized customer reviews.
What Customers Are Saying
The Minwax refinisher is generally effective at removing old finishes from wood furniture without damaging the underlying wood. Many users found it easy to use and praised its fast-acting formula for preserving the natural patina. However, some customers were disappointed, reporting it required more effort and multiple applications compared to the previous Formby's brand. A few also noted issues with the strong chemical smell and liquid consistency causing drips and stains. Overall, the product works well for simple refinishing jobs, but may not be as effective or user-friendly as the discontinued Formby's for more complex furniture restoration projects.

Would RecommendI've refinished numerous pieces of furniture over the years and long ago settled on Formby products. Nothing did a better or quicker job. This Minwax product is a replacement for Formby's Furniture Refinisher, the liquid product targeted for varnish and shellac finishes. This works equally well and should behave just like Formby's. I've called Formby's and they apparently are no longer making their refinishing products. Just a note - this is NOT the same as Formby's Paint and Poly Remover...

Stripper
Would Not RecommendI rubbed the chair with this stuff and it stopped ALL the finish off and wouldn't refinish the surface.

Removing OLD, OLD finish
Would RecommendHave a table that's approximately 80 years old; with the original finish. Crackly, lumpy, discolored. For me, I want it to look like when my father made it. Furniture Refinisher worked perfectly, took off all the old shellas/varnish without harming the wood itself!

Finish remover
Would RecommendWorked pretty good removing the older black finish on antiques. I only did the top and left the legs with the old finish.

Wood Stripper
Would RecommendEasy and fast - good stuff, but it takes a lot of cans to do a job.
Great product! Does what it claims to do. Easy to use and no strong fumes.
Furniture Refinisher
Would RecommendRefinisher works great! Minimal mess, breaks down decades old varnish and stain
did not work
Would Not Recommendprobably didn't work because the cans were too old. tops of cans were covered in chems supposedly evaporation.
