Ratings & Reviews for Minwax Antique Furniture Refinisher Oil-modified Wood refinisher ( 1-quart )
Ratings may include incentivized customer reviews.
What Customers Are Saying
The Minwax refinisher is generally effective at removing old finishes from wood furniture without damaging the underlying wood. Many users found it easy to use and praised its fast-acting formula for preserving the natural patina. However, some customers were disappointed, reporting it required more effort and multiple applications compared to the previous Formby's brand. A few also noted issues with the strong chemical smell and liquid consistency causing drips and stains. Overall, the product works well for simple refinishing jobs, but may not be as effective or user-friendly as the discontinued Formby's for more complex furniture restoration projects.

Would Not RecommendI purchased this product because i could no longer find "Klean Strip Klean Kutter Refinisher". The Min-Wax Refinisher was ineffective and took almost an entire quart to do what the Klean Strip would've done with less than half a quart. A waste of money. I suspect the EPA has something to do with the lack of availability of "the good stuff". This product is useless.

I was a big fan but .....
Would Not RecommendI'm refinishing 2 mid-century drssers. 1 i finished with this refinisher I had from 2 yrs ago and slowish but not bad. The second identical dresser I'm using a new tin just purchased. This is taking 4x as long and just not dissolving the finish despite following the directions as I did on the 1st dresser. And the cost has increased significantly.

Worked GREAT!!!
Would RecommendWorked GREAT!!! I used it to strip the varnish from a large coffee table that opens up for storage…., with exterior hinges and other exterior hardware that I didn’t want to have to remove. I bought this and another cheaper product (which did not work). I did small areas at a time and wiped with a clean rag (used lots) as I went to help remove the stain. Went back over it again in spots after I was done to ensure the little bit of color I left on it was consistent-steel wool and wipe with rag-as ...

Works as anticipated if you have any idea of what
Would RecommendI have been using this, as well as Formby's for many years and I honestly don't know where the negative reviews come from. It works fine. No, it's not magic but nothing is. It does exactly what it is supposed to do. It's a chemical compound - not a twig you waive while muttering fake Latin.

not laquer remover !
Would Not RecommendI paid premium price for the product I needed to remove laquer finish on a life edge top. the laquer laughed at this product ! not even a scratch!
I tried a ‘stripper’ first but Minwax Furniture Refinisher was faster, much easier and half the price of the stripper. I highly recommend!
Meh. No Difference
Would Not RecommendI was disappointed that it was not the easy strip solution it portrays itself to be. Not much different than the citrus stripper in my experience. I ended up stripping the furniture the usual way. I saw no difference in performance between this product and the citrus strippers.

Not Formbys but ok
Would Not RecommendIf you thought for a minute that the execs at Sherwin Williams/minwax copied Formbys, you are wrong. This stuff is ok, but not near the level of Formbys. So how does it work? Ok if you have to remove stubborn spots that stripper does not get after a couple of applications. Be prepared with a lot of steel wool and patience. If you have grooves or angles, you will need even more time and patience. Not sure how I will integrate to my use in the future.... But is the last thing I buy. Still tossing...

Not as good as old Homer Formby's, just cheaper
Would Not RecommendMinwax bought out Homer Formby's and this is supposed to replace it. Not even close. It's a dangerous product so be sure to follow all precautions - something I didn't do with Homer's and I used it on the wood floor throughout an entire house once without getting sick or wearing a mask. This product did melt off the old finish, but even with a mask it burned my lungs.

Good, not great
Would RecommendIt helped break up the lacquer on my old wooden door. However, it didn’t take it down to the wood finish, so I still had to sand afterwards. But it was a much easier sanding (used less sanding disks) than previous doors.

Waste of Time and Money
Would Not RecommendI wasted my time and money with this product. I followed the directions exactly as stated but my results were less than ideal. The piece of furniture looks worse than when I started. I guess I will be stripping and sanding after all…
