Ratings & Reviews for Minwax Antique Furniture Refinisher Oil-modified Wood refinisher ( 1-quart )
Ratings may include incentivized customer reviews.
What Customers Are Saying
The Minwax refinisher is generally effective at removing old finishes from wood furniture without damaging the underlying wood. Many users found it easy to use and praised its fast-acting formula for preserving the natural patina. However, some customers were disappointed, reporting it required more effort and multiple applications compared to the previous Formby's brand. A few also noted issues with the strong chemical smell and liquid consistency causing drips and stains. Overall, the product works well for simple refinishing jobs, but may not be as effective or user-friendly as the discontinued Formby's for more complex furniture restoration projects.

Great product
Would RecommendThis is an easy way to refinish wood items. I wouldn't recommend it for large projects, but for smaller it is great.

Big mistake
I bought this product because Homer Formby's furniture refinisher has been replaced by Minwax Antique Furniture Refinisher. It is terrible. I've used the Formby's product for years and it is awesome. This product doesn't hold a candle to the Formby's refinisher. I've been making furniture and refinishing furniture for 60 years, so I'm not a beginner. Just terribly disappointed.

Not equal to Formbys refinisher
Would Not RecommendIt has cost me at least 4 new color coats to nearly equal the result given me by Formbys. Bring back Formbys refinisher. The Minwax removed much deep seated color staining that Formbys retained. The result is much duller than the work done exclusively with Formbys. With fine antiques, Formbys is mandatory.

Found a much better product for less
Would Not RecommendThis product is just okay. I needed to strip varnish from 62 year old kitchen cabinets and found something more industrial that was also a little less expensive. This product would probably work okay for something that didn't have as much lacquer as my project did. I would not buy again.

Worked exactly right!
Would RecommendBought to refinish an antique oak mirror frame. Lightly sanded, used Minwax Antique Refinisher, followed by Minwax Paste Finishing Wax in Natural.

Not work on vertical surfaces
Would Not RecommendI read glowing reviews for this product and ended up purchasing it to remove varnish on teak window frames on a boat. The product is so liquid, it would not stay on the surface and dribbled onto the gel coat and stained the fiberglass. Very unhappy after reading the glowing reviews from others. I have not tried it on a horizontal surface.

Need to be able to buy in bulk
Would RecommendThis product works fine but it is hidden in the store so well that associates don't even know they carry it (literally). Lowes has a limited supply in stock (3 cans) one refinish job takes at least 2 cans. It would help if minmax sold this in larger quantities.

Would RecommendMinWax is one of my fav product. Poor product description on the site wasted my time. I thought this may help you guys. They said No to PLOY and PAINT
The best!
I have refinished numerous pieces of furniture over the years and have used various products. But when my daughter's house burned and a rocker from the 1800's was affected by the heat, I needed to find a product that would not effect the glue used but would remove the old shellac/varnish covering that had been heat involved. Sandpaper was out of the question due to the age of the wood. I investigated Minwax refinisher and if was perfect! I needed to wipe on and wipe off a lot but it was worth...

Same as Formby's
Would RecommendI've refinished numerous pieces of furniture over the years and long ago settled on Formby products. Nothing did a better or quicker job. This Minwax product is a replacement for Formby's Furniture Refinisher, the liquid product targeted for varnish and shellac finishes. This works equally well and should behave just like Formby's. I've called Formby's and they apparently are no longer making their refinishing products. Just a note - this is NOT the same as Formby's Paint and Poly Remover...
