Ratings & Reviews for Kobalt 40-volt Max 12-in Straight Battery String Trimmer with Edger Conversion Capable (Battery and Charger Included)

What Customers Are Saying
The cordless string trimmer provides ample power for most trimming and edging tasks, with a battery that generally lasts long enough to complete an average-sized yard on a single charge. The automatic line feed system works well, though can be somewhat wasteful of string at times. The trimmer is lightweight and easy to maneuver, though taller users may find the fixed shaft length awkward. The dual-line cutting head delivers good coverage and performance. However, some users have reported issues with the durability of the trimmer, particularly the spool cover, and replacement parts can be difficult to obtain. Additionally, the trimmer may struggle with very thick or overgrown weeds and brush.

Nice trimmer for the money!!
Would RecommendI have been looking at these for quite some time looking to replace my corded trimmer which was a bit heavy and cumbersome to deal with. When I got this home, assembly was straight forward and pretty easy. Battery charged up within the hour. It handled all my edging needs without any issues or the battery dying. I have a decent sized yard and a lot of little things to trim around including fence, house, flower beds, curb, etc. The auto feed feature was easily overcome by keeping the finger on th...

Disappointed
Would Not RecommendI bought this trimmer to replace an old gas model. Cordless, battery power seemed appealing. But I found three big negatives: 1) it is Heavy. I am a 72 year old female, but I am active and strong. I had to rest my arm on the battery pack to keep the trimmer balanced and ended up with a big bruise on my arm. 2) I went through two spools of string before I finished the trim job. I'm not trimming a manicured lawn edge. My terrain is uneven and somewhat rocky; if not I'd just use a lawn mower...
Awesome trimmer great value!
Would RecommendIn response to those who say the battery life is short. You must be doing something wrong. I use this on our 5 acre property, which includes a 1/3acre pond that we keep manicured. I have also cleared about a half an acre of weeds and brush using this, the 20volt hedge trimmers, and 20 volt chain saw. No complaints what so ever. I use it on slow speed, and it lasts a very long time. I do not do all the trimming at once mind you. But when the battery is close to done I'm more than done. I had my...
I have an acre and a quaternary and saw on the box that it trims 1.75 miles. It does not. It is also very gutless. I took it back and got a home light 2 stroke and have been very happy with it.
Weak tool with awkward handling
Would Not RecommendI bought this tools and had to replace it immediately since the charger was broken. When I got the replacement I wasn't much happier. The "automatic" line feed is very temperamental and couldn't do the job even when it was extended. I have average matted grass I was trying to cut through-- it couldn't cut through the grass! I am returning it today.
In 30 years best trimmer for me
Would Recommendfor cordless has more power than I expected even after noticing it uses a dual cord. Is so light and ergonomic designed my wife is using it where she was afraid of others. Easy to string with other brands of string trimmer as long as you use the same diamiter. I have had no difficulty edging, trimming and mowing. I have about 1/4 acer and finish without recharge.
Battery and Auto Feed
Would Not RecommendKolbalt 40v Trimmer - This was my first experience with a cordless trimmer and thou I loved the time savings of not dragging a cord, I will be returning this trimmer to the store. Pros: Power - I found the power of the to be more than enough. Handling - I found no noticeable difference in the handling or weight over my corded trimmer. It handled well. Convenience - I loved the time savings of not dragging a cord. Cutting Ability - The .065 trimmer line cut through normal grass and weeds with...
doessn't hold charge
Would Not RecommendThis is by worst the most trimmer I have ever owned. It cuts through 2 to 4 inches of regular weeds, But You get into the broad leaf grass, such as crab grass or ivy vines I is completely useless. If my yard laid with new grass that did not have all the bad broad leaf grass it would bee perfect. Battery won't stay charged for better run time.
Quit.after one month. String impossible to use.
Would Not RecommendThe string locked up constantly. Then it quit working after a month.
plenty of power
Would Recommendthis edger trimmer has more then enough power for the weeds in a regularly mowed yard.my only complaint is how fast the line runs out so I refed my line with only 1 outlet thus using half the line and the unit still worked great and I now never run out of line mid yard.
NO Quality Control, of the " LINE " !! BEWARE !
Would Not RecommendThe TRIMMER , works FINE but, YOU HAVE to USE " KOBALT LINE" to FULLY Utilized the EQUIPMENT ( GOOD LUCK ) ??? The "LAST TIME" I tried (to Trim My Front Yard), I SPENT MORE TIME ..... REWINDING the LINE ( It SHOOTS OUT MORE then, 2 FT. of LINE that, is WASTED or WRAPS AROUND the TRIMMER !!!) On ONE Spool, I had to SPOT 8-10 to "REWIND" ALL the LINE ......COSTING ME the WORK TIME, I had :0( THAT, SAME $20.00 Pack of LINE , 1-2FT of LINE , I WOULD SEE LYING in MY YARD! ONE SPOOL ...
Perfect trimmer for me
Would RecommendAfter reading several reviews about this trimmer, I decided to buy it. I just use it to trim a little around the edges and got tired about pulling my arm out trying to get the old gas trimmer started. After 3 weeks, I am still on my first charge! The battery life is very good, The straight design is not what I like but OK. The auto trimmer line feed can be defeated by not stopping every few seconds and just to finish one section before stopping. Remember each time you let go of the trigger, the ...

Works Great
Would RecommendHusband say's it only takes 1/2 battery to do the whole acre. Not bad....

Poorly made
Would Not RecommendBattery won't fit in charger without a shim. Line tangles up every minute or so. Seems like a decent design ruined by a lack of quality control in the factory.
Battery???????????
Would Not RecommendThe trimmer works well, but the battery does not hold up. I have an acre of land but need to re-charge 2 - 3 times to finish trimming around my house and around plants in the yard. Kobalt advertises the battery will go for 1.75 miles, but no way I come even close to that. And it overheats easily in the summer. But that's when you're supposed to use it. I don't cut grass in the winter (except sparingly).
Quite Impressed
Would RecommendAfter just a couple uses this trimmer seem quite nice. Only issue that I can forsee is fast line usage. Battery life seems good right now. We will see about longevity. If the battery holds up over time I will buy more tools to use the battery with

Good Purchase So Far!
Would RecommendSo far so good with this trimmer. I used to have a gas trimmer, but it finally died after 17 years. I decided to go with a battery powered one. I have used it three times and it has enough juice for me to completely do my 1/2 acre yard. It is more quiet than a gas powered one. It took me a little while to get used to the lack of noise, but had enough power to trim the long grass along my chain link fence. Seems to be made of high quality material.

Works, just not what expected
Would Not RecommendHad a two cycle that quit after 6+ years. Bought this for the benefit of not having to mess with oil/gas mixture & not wanting to spend the extra for a 4 cycle. May eventually could get used to but taking this one back. Smaller yard yet battery was on two of four lights after work. Maybe partly due to not used to having a motor not running from start to end be it line spinning or not. Small diameter line so more work on the motor/line then used to. Could edge with my old one but couldn't fi...
Almost no run time and no customer service
Would Not RecommendRun time on battery is maybe 10 - 15 minutes. Box and web site indicate up to 1.75 miles on a charge. They would be running all the way with the run time I get. Called customer service, 3 callers ahead of me and it still took over a hour to talk to someone. Told to expect maybe 15 - 25 minutes per charge. That would be better than I am getting but not very useful. No other concern or help from customer service. Not going to pay $99 for a second battery. Wish I could have given 0 star.
