What Customers Are Saying
The Zinsser oil-based primer appears to be an effective product for covering and sealing a variety of surfaces, including stains, wood grains, and difficult areas. Customers reported that it provides excellent coverage, adhesion, and sandability, making it suitable for use on walls, ceilings, cabinets, furniture, and exterior wood. good for cedar trim
Would RecommendExcellent coverage, dried fast. Used to seal cedar trim boards, two coats. Really did a good job locking in the cedar oils etc. so they can be painted later with minimal bleed through.

Saved time by not requiring sanding
Used to prime a shiny natural wood staircase railing without dabbing or stripping. Painted white and black after priming and it worked great!

Covers stains but terrible applications
Would Not RecommendI bought this to keep wood stain from bleeding through primer and paint on stained wood. For that purpose it works. However, this primer causes peaks and doesn't self-level. If you want a smooth surface, expect to use multiple coats followed by a lot of sanding. I would give this product 5 stars if it wasn't for this major issue.

A must before painting!
Would RecommendI was thankful this was recommended to me. I would’ve painted directly on my trim. By using the primer and taking the extra step, it will save me time and money later. One coat of paint is all that’s needed now.

Dries Too Fast and Too Thick.
Would Not RecommendI attempted to use Zinsser "Cover Stain Primer" for a set of wood cabinets and got unsatisfactory results. The first coat I applied did not level out at all and was dry to the touch in a matter of minutes. Also, while I was painting from the can I noticed the paint was trying to dry and form a skin. After waiting one full day I sanded this coat and attempted to apply a second coat and received the same results. I should add that both days the temperature and relative humidity were within the ...
