Ratings & Reviews for Scotts Turf Builder Broadcast Spreader 5-lb Capacity Compatible with Ice Melt, Salt, Fertilizer, Seed
Ratings may include incentivized customer reviews.
What Customers Are Saying
The hand spreader has received mixed reviews. Some found it to be an affordable and convenient option for small yards, while many were disappointed with its poor performance and durability. Key positives include even fertilizer distribution and easy handling. However, the majority of reviews highlight significant issues such as clogging, awkward mechanism, and cheap build quality. Many reported the spreader breaking or malfunctioning after limited use, and it was not effective for lighter materials. Overall, the consensus is that this is an adequate option for very small yards and light-duty use, but lacks the consistency, reliability, and durability expected for more demanding spreading needs.

Would RecommendI like the way it fits your hand and it's lightweight. But, the gear mechanism and turn handle are simply flimsy and the 1st one I purchased quit working properly after spreading lightweight fertilizer. I received a replacement and it seems to work better. Would not recommend it for heavy seed or fertilizer product spreading. It does broadcast well for a hand held spreader.

Terrible and poorest quality
Would Not RecommendThe crank turns fine as long as there is nothing in the spreader. I was using Scotts turf-builder in this thing and it worked--not very well- for about three or four minutes. Had I kept using this, I'm certain the handle would have broken off but I gave up on it before that occurred, my fingers started to blister so I quit. This is going back to Lowes. I had a spreader that was the same brand that I bought from Lowes about 5 or 6 years ago and it worked well year after year until it was lost in ...

Handle Design
Would Not RecommendWhy is crank handle so tiny. I thought it had another part..an actual handle that covered it. Just seems like a poor design.

Cheaply Made
Would Not RecommendCompletely made of plastic. Get a little bit of grass seed dust in the gears and its over! Can hardly turn the crank.

Bad spreader
Would Not RecommendI have used these over the years and a few years back I noticed a change. This product used to be a good spreader but now they are made like cheap junk. I don't know why Scotts who makes good products felt the need to cheapen this product. Do not buy it.

My old Metal Spreader rusted out
Would RecommendPurchased this super easy to use spreader after rust finally took out my old "Antique" spreader. This is very easy to hold in one had because of the arm rest. Even with a full load of grass seed or fertilizer, it is not heavy at all. Keep your bag of material close by for easy reload, For some reason many times when I've used this spreader, it was a windy day. Ever feel like someone is watching and turns on mother nature? So do yourself a favor read the mixture bag, follow dropping setting direc...

needed a replacement.
Would RecommendLowe's guy recommended this so I give it a try. It is very ergonomic and helps distribute the weight, so that is helpful. As with all of Scotts devices, they are designed exclusively for their product. I tried using an alternate brand of lawn fertilizer and realized it only likes to disperse a smaller size of granule than I was using as the wheel would stick often. Overall it is very nice.

Do not waste your money
Would Not RecommendI was really excited about fertilizing our very small lot this year and sadly did not read the reviews on this product. After 10 seconds of turning the crank on this spreader, the gears jammed up and the handle broke off. I had to make another trip to Lowe's to return this item, and I ended up purchasing the push spreader. So, I ended up getting what I paid for. Spend the extra $15 and get the push device...it will save you time and headache. This hand held spreader is cheap and poorly made.

I Hope They Will Give Me My Money Back
Would Not RecommendI love the idea behind this product and thought the arm extension would be helpful and it was. The issue with this device is the orange crank. When the container is empty it cranks easily. When the container is full it is much harder to turn. So hard that it is impossible to evenly distribute the product because of the inability to consistently turn the crank at the same speed. I used Scott's crabgrass preventer in it for the first time. I hope I can get my money back.

Did they test it with fertilizer in it?
Would Not RecommendDid Scott's or Lowe's even test this product before they went to sell it? In the store it feels good and spins easily. Got it home and use on plastic Super Big Gulp cup of Weed and Feed, went to use it and it jammed. The handle could not be turn. Everything looks to be plastic even the working parts. The chute that hold the fertilizer in until use lasted about three trigger pulls then would not shut completely. DO NOT BUY THIS. I feel bad I cannot give this all zeroes.

Very Poor Product
Would Not RecommendI tried to use this to spread pellatized lime. Within 20 turns of the crank, the lime had entered the bottom of the housing underneath the spreader disk and jammed the gears. Shaking it allowed a few more turns but it soon hung up completely.

Who tested this product?
Would Not RecommendI was initially hesitant to purchase this spreader but hoped with the design it would spread 5 pounds of grass seed and a few pounds of wildflower seed in a relatively even disbursement. The first few turns of the crank did as expected but soon the dust from the seeds must have gotten underneath the rotor and slowed the spinning spreader so it became more difficult to spin the crank. This added instability to the whole unit and made it difficult to spread with any sort of consistency. Add this t...
