What Customers Are Saying
Customers overwhelmingly praise these wood stair treads for transforming outdated carpeted stairs into premium features. Most highlight the solid red oak construction, exceptional grain quality, and how beautifully the wood accepts stain and finish—many report results matching existing flooring and railings. Reviewers consistently note the treads look like custom millwork rather than DIY products. Installation is manageable with common tools and adhesives, with customers appreciating the ability to retrofit over existing stairs without full replacement. The cost savings compared to complete staircase replacement are frequently mentioned. A few report minor fragility during cutting, but the overwhelming majority consider the effort worthwhile and would recommend without hesitation.

Would RecommendMy wife and I never liked our carpeted stairs. They were always dirty. I had seen these at Lowes and decided to give them a try. Stained the treads and the matching oak risers and had them installed a few days later. What a difference. Great product, solid oak, took stain well. Highly recommend them.

Great Stair Tread
Would RecommendThere's been enough reviews extolling the quality of these stair treads and I agree with them. They're very good. One thing to think about before re-doing your stairs with wood is the new noise level. We figured it would be louder in the stairwell, and we were right. It isn't horrible, but definitely louder. So I got a tapestry of sorts and hung it up in the stairwell on a frame. It does a great job of dampening the extra noise. It takes a fair amount of skill and time to do the job.
Great way to refub your stairs...
Would RecommendNot the easiest project to complete, but the stair tool is a must. Take your time and it will come out fantastic. Do order the 3/4" risers. Make sure you look over every piece before accepting, I didn't have much of an issue with quality.
Amazing Results
Would RecommendBeen looking for a suitable stair replacement for the nasty carpet for 8 years. No matter how hard we tried to never wear shoes in the house, the carpeted stairs always looked dirty. Retro Treads are awesome. However, I wouldn't suggest using tile risers like I did due to the fact of being very difficult and back breaking to install. The Retro Treads are very easy to work with as long as you have the tools. Without a doubt, order the stair tracing tool for scribing the stair treads to the wall. ...
No water based adhesive
Would RecommendOverall good product that looks great. The company should make it more clear to NOT use a water based adhesive. They will warp.
Perfect for my upgrade.
Would RecommendI'm very happy to find these. My steps going downstairs were carpeted. I removed the carpet in hopes of finding useable treads that I might have to refinish. Instead I found various sizes of construction lumber. I was afraid I was going to have to put carpet back in and I didn't want to do that. I found exact size of treads I needed. They require finishing and I have not put them yet so I'm not sure about installation but the measured size is exact as the lumber that is there now so I am expecti...

Wow. No more grubby carpet.
Would RecommendTook longer than expected, but came out great. We are very pleased with the look and quality of the wood. The price was incredible for oak. Make sure depth of tread is deep enough for your project. We had to use 3/4" oak plywood for riser or would have had gap.
Beware
Would RecommendIf the existing tread is bigger than the width minus the nosing - it will not fit!

Excellent solution
Would RecommendOur 2x10 stairwell was a mess. We took the carpet off and rebuilt the entire mess. We used s Retro stair treads and had a great result. It wasn't a weekend project but well worth the effort.
Watch the bottom trim before accepting
Would RecommendI redid my stair casing from carpet to hardwood and I'm totally satisfied with the project. I purchased one of the 12 treads needed to see if it was "as shown"... and it was. I used a table saw to cut the depth, a 12" chop saw and a stair template to cut the width. The only quality problem I encountered was the "decor flange lip" was damaged on a few pieces but Lowe's exchanged with no problem. They stained and finished very well. Just take your time AND follow the instructions. I if you are pai...

Product lives up to its billing.
Would RecommendProduct went in as advertised. 42" = 42". I thought there would have been some extra for tweaking but that wasn't the case. I had to caulk (very little) to handle minor fit problems. The phote also shows a nose piece with a miter joint and that wasn't the case. Good quality and took coating evenly. Overall very pleased with the result.

Good product
Would RecommendGreat product to refurbish a stairway you will need a stair square I found on line to measure the treads and risers that came in very helpful. retro-treads website has good u tube videos for instillation very good if your stairs are open on one side or both. for making the cut for the return . I left them natural about 8 to 10 coats of polly great finish matches the prefinished bella wood flooring.
Not very good quality
Would Not RecommendThe quality is poor, item was shipped and 9/10 was damaged, when i bought 9 more one immediately cracked.

The best product ever!
Would RecommendThese stairstreads are awesome. I stained them dark walnut then applied two coats of Bono poly. They took the stain beautifully. The installation was a breeze (took about 1/2 a day) and my stairs turned out perfectly. I am very happy with this product and highly recommend.
I could not be happier with this product.
Would RecommendIt is easy to work with, looks great before and after finishing. It's a great value. More than I expected.

heads up (a drawback)
Would RecommendPurchased, stained, cut and installed on my own. However, if your steps are recessed into the wall and you cut off the bullnose section as directed there is no way the retrotread will cover that big gaping hole you now have. You will need to cut that bullnose section flush to the wall and paint over it or patch it. GOOD LUCK.
Stairs look great!
Would RecommendOur stairs turned out very nicely and at not much more cost than the simple bull-nose treads without the cap molding (or whatever it's called). There didn't seem to be any flaws in the wood and it is very sturdy. The treads are pieced together from four narrower boards plus the nosing, but I didn't expect a single piece for this price, so that's acceptable. This tread design matches the landing, which we made from risers that were also pieced together (see photo). We left the wood natural and pu...

One of the best ideas for home improvement
Would RecommendIt was a great idea by the person who came up with the retro stair tread. I could not keep the carpet clean as everyone had to come up the stairs to get into the living area. These retreads look beautiful. I did have a person who is good with wood to install them. He used a sheet of oak for the back of the stairs that matched the treads themselvs. I put three coats of polyurithane on them myself and they look beautiful. Everyone comments on the stairs.
carpet to wood made easy
Would RecommendWanted wood steps and saw these advertised in Lowes magazine. After researching, decided to go for it. My stairs look great and was an easy project. Thanks Retro Tread.
