What Customers Are Saying
Customers overwhelmingly praise these wood stair treads for transforming outdated carpeted stairs into premium features. Most highlight the solid red oak construction, exceptional grain quality, and how beautifully the wood accepts stain and finish—many report results matching existing flooring and railings. Reviewers consistently note the treads look like custom millwork rather than DIY products. Installation is manageable with common tools and adhesives, with customers appreciating the ability to retrofit over existing stairs without full replacement. The cost savings compared to complete staircase replacement are frequently mentioned. A few report minor fragility during cutting, but the overwhelming majority consider the effort worthwhile and would recommend without hesitation.

Would RecommendThe stair treads are high quality. Only issue is that Lowes does not stock the 60" length. If you have wrapping bottom stairs, ask if they can get you the longer ones to eliminate splicing.

Stair remodel
Would RecommendAwesome product got rid of the carpet. Easy install easy finish great upgrade
Good product. Good price. Lousy service
Would RecommendI purchased a number of these treads at Lowe’s in Salem, NH. Days later I needed one more. Salem’s website showed they had 16 more. I’m Placed an order for one then received a call explaining there were none in stock. The store did nothing to get me one from another store. I then had to drive a good distance away to buy it from another store.

Stair renew
Great Product! The 5/8 thickness met my requirements for not raising the step to much and also giving it some solidity/durability. This is not a one or two day project, especially if you have a lot of prep work, which I did. The stringers weren't flat. I had to sand/chisel a smooth surface on the stringer so the tread would fit. Once that was done, I was able to use a stair tread widget that measures the angles of both stringers and transfer that to the new tread and make my cut. I didn't c...
Nice system but has it's pitfalls
Would RecommendOverall I am very happy with the looks of the final installation but the installation video timeline of a half a day is completely unrealistic. Be prepared to spend 2-3 hours taking up the old carpet and removing nails. The removal of the bull nose and making the old riser and tread flush took me close to 8 hours. It did not help that my treads were recessed into the side of the old stairs. Plan on some time painting and repairing the old stairs before installation. The treads need to be finish...
Red Oak Stair Tread
Would RecommendThe stair treads are good. We removed all carpet from stairs and replaced with these. Only issue we had is it is difficult to match (stain) these with any other wood flooring.

awesome solution to replace steps
Would RecommendI replaced 16 treads and risers and except for the part of cutting off the old tread overhang it went very smoothly.

Great way to get solid oak stairs
Would RecommendI had to replace the old carpet on the stairs and wanted hardwood stairs instead. I was considering either the laminate cap version of retro conversion or this RetroTread version using solid oak. This solid oak version was the right one! I bought 11 treads from store stock so I could inspect them individually. I also bought the return end caps for one open side tread. The new treads were sanded with 220 grit sandpaper and 3 coats of oil based polyurethane clear coat was applied, no stain. The...

Must get!!
Would RecommendIf you are remodeling your stairs this is simply the only way to go. I have never done stairs but this made it easy. Stains great applied 2 coats with 4 coats of clear coat. This is solid wood you can not go wrong. Cuts great with minimal splintering.
Very Happy With New Stairs
Would RecommendI purchased the RetroTread stair treads and am very happy with the results. It took me a while to complete the project but it was my first time doing anything like this. Would surely recommend this product.
Glad to hear the product met your expectations!!! Thanks for the feedback!

RetroTread
Would Not RecommendI wanted the look of real wood on my stairs and was really looking forward to the change. I stained the RetroTreads and applied a good poly. They turned out beautifully. I placed them with 3 different adhesives, on and off twice, because they didn't stick with the adhesive that was recommended. Now they have had a reaction to something, adhesive vs coolness in the garage, who knows but they have all cupped and some have cracked. I went with all of the positive references but I now have to re...
FABULOUS PRODUCT
Would RecommendUsed on 2 sets of stairs that were carpeted. You do have to have a reasonable amount of skill and some good saws and tools, but if so, you can do a professional looking job. Don't buy risers. Buy a sheet of luaun and cut and paint your own. MUCH cheaper than buying the oak risers. About to buy them again to redo carpeted stairs in another remodel.
Careful they break when you cut them
Would Not RecommendThese break when you cut them and Lowes won't take them back ... Don't buy them if they are too long.
Excellent solution for my stairs
Would RecommendSanding, cutting, stained with golden pecan, polyurethane, glued and after one month almost done.
Excellent solution for my stairs!!
Would RecommendTook me around 1 month. I can work on my stairs on my day off only. But I'm proud of myself. Lady tool. I need put a baseboard and I will be say it's done. The retro tread make me more easy my proyect. For raiser I used plywood and save money. Unfortunately I can't add photos. Something happen with the system
Very pleased to hear the product met your expectations!! Thank you for your business!
