What Customers Are Saying
The Minwax refinisher is generally effective at removing old finishes from wood furniture without damaging the underlying wood. Many users found it easy to use and praised its fast-acting formula for preserving the natural patina. However, some customers were disappointed, reporting it required more effort and multiple applications compared to the previous Formby's brand. A few also noted issues with the strong chemical smell and liquid consistency causing drips and stains. Overall, the product works well for simple refinishing jobs, but may not be as effective or user-friendly as the discontinued Formby's for more complex furniture restoration projects.

Would RecommendTook care of stained speakers with light water marks. Impressed with product.
Wood stripper
Would RecommendUse Citrus-strip first, then Formby's using 00 steel wool. No sanding required.
The Chemical Burns!
Would RecommendThis stuff works great but make sure you're wearing solid chemical gloves. It burns through cheaper gloves and you definitely don't want it on your skin.
Formby's furniture Refinisher, not Minwax
Would RecommendCould not believe how easy it was to use. It did a fantastic job removing the old finish. And Formby's does not affect the original stain. The wood looks fantastic. Now I amputing a new finish on it with Formby's Tung Oil Finish. It has made the wood grain look so good that I don't want to give it back to the gentleman who owns it. Of course I will give it back. I guarantee this is a new tool in my tool box. It is really well spent money. And extremely easy to use. 6 coats of Tung Oil rubbed in,...
Formbys refinisher
Would RecommendGreat stuff- have used it for years. Best on the market for home furniture refinishing.
removing finish from dining sideboard
Would RecommendThis was the perfect product for the job. Make sure there is lots of ventilation and wear a mask. Get 0000 steel wool for first passes, remove the rest with old sheet squares. The extra effort to really get the finish off is worth the work.
Worked great to strip/refinish an antique family heirloom! Looks better than ever.
antique piece
Would RecommendUsing this product to help strip the old varnish finish off of a 100 year old piece of furniture. This product is working to remove the hardened and aged finish.

Best I have ever tried!
Would RecommendThis is my favorite product when refinishing furniture. No matter the old finish, Formby's will make it look good.
Minwax Liquid Wood Paint Remover
Would RecommendEasy to apply with a brush. Bubbles up use putty knife remove.
Wrong .. it is a different product.
Would RecommendThe title is wrong, this is not paint remover, it is furniture refinisher. Paint remover is a different product.
Love this stuff for old furniture
Would RecommendDissolves the old finish without removing the beautiful patina of the wood. Easy to use and not as toxic or harsh as chemical strippers. Only downside is that it takes a lot. I went through nearly two full cans for one small mahogany side table. That might be because I washed with clean liquid several times to make sure I had all the gunk off, but it was worth it.
Love This Refinisher
Would RecommendFormby's has sometime been hard for me to find as I have moved around so I was really happy to unexpectedly find it at Lowe's. Great product and always yields perfect results for what I am trying to do - which is usually just cleaning up antiques to restore their appearance. Many people have commented on how good the finish is on our furniture and I always credit that to Formby's.
Paint REFINISHER not a Paint Remover
Would RecommendWatch Minwax's YouTube video on refinishing furniture before using this product. It is supposed to be paired with a paint stripper. You scrape off a layer of varnish with the stripper. Then dip steel wool in this refinisher and take off the remaining varnish. If you use the refinisher with the paint stripper according to the video instructions you end up with nice clean bare wood that is ready to be stained or painted.
Easy Stripping Method
Would RecommendI had used this product previously and always been satisfied. It is easy to use and does a good job removing the old finish. The fumes are quite strong so I'd strongly recommend using it outside.
Refinishing Project
Would RecommendI am refinishing a kitchen table and Formby's was recommended to remove varnish in Handyman magazine. I saw that it was available at Lowe's and decided to give it a try. This is my first refinishing project so I was a bit nervous when getting started. I too recommend using heavy rubber gloves as mentioned in a previous post. I first doubled up on latex gloves and the chemical ate right through both and began to burn a little. Use the right gloves! I followed the application directions as listed ...
Refinisher
Would RecommendPerfect project for refinishing without stripping the whole project.
