Ratings & Reviews for Kobalt 40-volt Max 12-in Straight Battery String Trimmer with Edger Conversion Capable (Battery and Charger Included)

What Customers Are Saying
The cordless string trimmer provides ample power for most trimming and edging tasks, with a battery that generally lasts long enough to complete an average-sized yard on a single charge. The automatic line feed system works well, though can be somewhat wasteful of string at times. The trimmer is lightweight and easy to maneuver, though taller users may find the fixed shaft length awkward. The dual-line cutting head delivers good coverage and performance. However, some users have reported issues with the durability of the trimmer, particularly the spool cover, and replacement parts can be difficult to obtain. Additionally, the trimmer may struggle with very thick or overgrown weeds and brush.

Would RecommendIt's a great string trimmer... plenty of power with 40V and light weight. Very easy to use with automatic line feed.
Not a good edger and string doesn't last...
Would Not RecommendI have had this trimmer/edger for almost a year now, and I wish I had bought a gas trimmer with the edger attachment. The ability to be an trimmer and edger and the battery operation sold me when I first bought this. However, using it as an edger is awkward. You turn it upside-down and it isn't comfortable to hold causing me to frequently take breaks because my thumb cramps. Also, the guard doesn't allow you to see where you are edging either. The head of the trimmer is very cheaply made. ...
I Have the KST 130X -06 and it Rocks!!
Would RecommendI have read a raft of reviews on the predecessor to this unit. Many whine about battery life, others about string toughness, others about the edge guide, others about the bump string feed button wearing out and not being in the parts list etc. This costs $149, goes together very easily, is readily balanced by moving the handle, charges quickly and runs long enough on a single charge that I am ready for a rest and a glass of iced tea while it recharges. Easily a half hour continuous on the low...
Be aware buying a Kobalt product
Would Not RecommendIf you need replacement parts for this product, they are not readily available. The store does not carry them and when you try to order through Kobalt, they are not available, and then they send you to the manufacturer and they charge you double for the part. Stay away from Kobalt products.
Not very durable
Would Not RecommendBought one of these a little over a year ago. (7/25/2015) It was OK for the first season...but had some problems with the string advancing using the PLASTIC push button advance system--managed to get through first season. However, this year it stopped advancing properly. PLASTIC (not durable, low quality) piece that advances with the spring inside the string head fails--gets stuck and does not advance and/or the spring does not have enough force to advance it or it does not fit well enough into ...
not worth the money
Would Not Recommendthe string advance has to be worst thought out system on the market. After buying replacement string and rewinding per the instructions, the string did not work properly. The power was good and battery lasted long enough to complete trimming. Sorry I waste my money on this trimmer.
Good Product
Would RecommendBeen looking at this line of garden tools, and now that I have bought on, I love it. The battery charges quickly and last a long time, I'm able to do both my yards on one charge. Wish I had bought on sooner, I like it much better then my Black and Decker.
Battery Failure
Would Not RecommendI bought it summer of 2016 and was disappointed by the batter life but not upset. I worked great as long as the battery lasted. When I started to use it this year, Spring 2017, the battery would not charge and was completely dead. 3 months of storage should not have killed the battery.
Fell apart as soon as i started using
Would Not Recommendgot this thing home plugged the battery in and put the guard on while waiting on it to charge as soon as i started using it the head flew off of it and small parts went everywhere i would not buy this or any kobalt battery powered tools go to the other store brand thats what i did (same price) and love it also they offer attachments for it as well be warned do not buy this
Kicks Butt!
Would RecommendThis is a great trimmer for the $. I got it on sale for $99.00 and it is worth every pennny. I was a bit worried but took a chance. So glad I did. Plenty of power. Did entire front yard and back and only used about 25% of the battery. The auto feed worked great. For normal yard and weeds this is a great buy. Scott F. Riverside
Good Power for a battery weed wacker
Would RecommendUsed this twice so far. The 40V battery gives it more than enough power. I was really surprised when I used it the first time. No issues at all. As far as the cord, will have to see how long a spindle lasts. But I have no doubt that I got what I needed and wanted. I
Tough Edger
Would RecommendEasy to put together. Easy to use, quick, yet felt a bit heavy after a few minutes but, hey, my arms need the workout! Great edging result and lawn looks professionally done! Great buy!
Best Trimmer For The City
Would RecommendI originally purchased the Kobalt 80 volt trimmer because I thought I needed the power to trim my medium-sized city lot. I found that trimmer to be a bit too powerful for a regular sized lot. I went back to Lowe's and grabbed the 40 volt trimmer (of course, I kept the 80 volt trimmer for commercial or country duty - there is no comparison). The 40 volt trimmer has just the right amount of power to trim my city lot with the normal amount of grass along the fence line. Great trimmer for all smalle...
Not good
Would Not RecommendThe trimmer does the job but I think there is something wrong in the design. I cannot find a comfortable way to hold it, like another review said it is too long and heavy for some. The reason I bought this one is to share the battery with my mower. Wouldn't recommend it.
Good trimmer, terrible battery
Would Not RecommendReplaced the battery 3 times in 3 years. at $100 each. How dumb do i have to be to keep buying batteries. I use this tool once a month at most. no excuse. Maybe Kobalt should call Dewalt and ask how to build a battery. I really wanted this to work. See the reviews on the battery. A lot of them are bad for a reason, it just dies no reason. Completely quits charging. You will probably love this tool for the first year. I did. Battery died under warranty Lowes said "Yeah i hear that alot. Go grab...
Quit running after a couple of trimmings
Would Not RecommendWas working great for first 4 to 5 uses. Then stopped like it had a dead battery. After charging again, nothing. I recharged the battery again with still no luck. I was fortunate that this occurred within the 30 days of purchase from Lowes, and they took the product back and refunded my money. Was great while it lasted, just didn't last long.
Very Disappointed, Long Term
Would Not RecommendI purchased this trimmer at the beginning of the spring. During the first couple of uses it worked as advertised. By the 3rd or 4th use the battery would not stay locked in, at one point the locking mechanism popped out all together. I was able to put the mechanism back in and reinforce the body of the trimmer around the battery so that the battery would stay locked in (think duct tape). It worked as advertised until I needed to purchase replacement spools for the trimmer. My neighborhood Lowe's...
OMG!!! You will NEVER go back to gas.
Would RecommendAfter reading the reviews, both good and bad, decided to give it a go. It arrived in 5 days, took 5 minutes to assemble and was off to hack some weeds. Other than the noise and smelly fumes, I honestly cannot tell a difference than my old pain in the rear gas model. That said, we live in a suburban neighborhood 60 X 125 foot lot with a 50' driveway. I can do all the weed eating for the sidewalks, walkway, drive way and around the pool on a single charge. Am I using it as a hedge hog? No, but for...
Poor Design
Would Not RecommendUnit is way too long and switch is on the end which means your right hand reaches way behind you to control switch. Very awkward. Length should be adjustable and switch should be located at a more natural position. Also the auto feed would feed too much string so I had to stop every 5-10 minutes to cut off excess. I returned it but kept the blower and the chain saw which I like. Hoping Lowes comes out with a redesigned weedeater for the set.
pleased
Would RecommendThis not a gas powered unit in terms of power but it does my 3/4 acre property on half charge. I have cut some tough stuff with it. I also got the hedge trimmer and blower . They are also very good units. The hedge trimmer cuts up to about 1/2 in. thick shrubs, impressive. The blower is very good, lots of power, but it eats the battery charge up before I am done , again I have three batteries so no big deal.Great tools for the home owner.
