Ratings & Reviews for Kobalt 40-volt Max 12-in Straight Battery String Trimmer with Edger Conversion Capable (Battery and Charger Included)

What Customers Are Saying
The cordless string trimmer provides ample power for most trimming and edging tasks, with a battery that generally lasts long enough to complete an average-sized yard on a single charge. The automatic line feed system works well, though can be somewhat wasteful of string at times. The trimmer is lightweight and easy to maneuver, though taller users may find the fixed shaft length awkward. The dual-line cutting head delivers good coverage and performance. However, some users have reported issues with the durability of the trimmer, particularly the spool cover, and replacement parts can be difficult to obtain. Additionally, the trimmer may struggle with very thick or overgrown weeds and brush.

We purchased this edger in July 2016, we used it once and now the battery will not charge!!! Need as to getting a replacement battery!!!!! I gave it a 3 stars because it does a good job if the battery worked!!!
Battery
We bought the weed wacker and blower, both are nice, only had a couple months when one battery wasnt charging, exchanged it out but now the second battery did the same, returning both machines
Great product
Would RecommendThis weed eater does a great job with the thick, heavy grass and weeds. I am very pleased with it. The only thing I don't like is the fact that the battery runs out pretty quickly. If the battery lasted longer that would make it better. This product is light weight which is one of the main reasons I bought it. I am very pleased with it and would recommend this product.

Battery Failed Along with Charger!
Would Not RecommendRead the warranty and make sure you understand it. The trimmer is guaranteed for 5 years but the battery and charger only for 3 years. Read all of the enclosed documentation. Suppose to be a hassle free returned and customer service didn't even know what to do until I pointed out documentation and the exchanged charger/battery for another one. We will see how long this one lasts.
Kobalt 40v 120x Weed Trimmer review.
Would Not RecommendMy review of same trimmer on Aug 2016, with a scale of 1 (worst) - 10 (best): 4. *Pro: Quick charge (charger incl) in 1 hr. Battery has about 20-30 min charge, fair enough for residential 1 acre or less lot. Relatively light unit, somewhat adjustable center handle, easy to operate. Balance is fair for me (5'8"" male). *Con: Dual sided spool mechanism is a disaster. Even when following instructions exactly, the line feed consistently fails to feed line, or alternatively fails to lock properly a...
I bought mine the other day
Would RecommendI bought my the other day and I use it down around my dock and it is great! For a woman not having to pull a cord it is awesome !I love it !
Expensive to use
Purchased after becoming frustrated with gas trimmers. Proprietary line system and very expensive to use. Had adequate power and seemed well constructed but used too much line. A three pack of the line cartiridges was 19.00, used tow cartridges to trim my half acre yard. Essentially 12.00 per week, way too expensive to use. Returned for another gas trimmer. Do not purchase.
Grab and go...so convenient
Would RecommendI love the fact that I don't have to spend time getting my gas trimmer to start and don't miss the gas smell. Also, so much more convenient than my electric blade trimmer...no lengthy/heavy extension cords to drag around or get in the way. Just grab and go...sooo convenient! Great battery life: I have trimmed/edged my 5000 sq ft lawn with 300 linear feet of edging three times on one charged battery! Only one con: flip edging guard is worthless
kobalt string trimmer and EDGER
Would Not RecommendJust purchased the Kobalt string trimmer and EDGER. got it from Lowes, got home put it together and looked for EDGER instructions in the User Manual. The word EDGER does NOT EXIST the in user manual. SO i called the 1800 number and the machine said we will be with you shortly, I am typing this after 1 HOUR on hold saying we will be with you shortly, the message says YOU CAN COUNT ON US for the test of time. But what about the test of time for a caller waiting over 1 HOUR. I still do not know h...
Kobalt 40 Volt MAX String Trimmer
Would RecommendI was quite surprised at the performance of this little machine! I bought it because of the light weight and figured it would be ok, but it performed admirably on three-foot weeds and grass that had grown nearly all summer. The machine cut through everything. I love it. The cons: -- Only comes with one battery and you will need at least two ($99.00 each) as the life is only about 20 - 30 minutes per charge. It could be due to the heavy weeds I was into that it had to strain a little. -- The...
Terrible. Get a Dewalt if you really want electric
Would Not RecommendBattery will just quit working in months. This has happened for about 1/2 the reviews on here. Neither Lowes nor Kobalt will rectify it, even in the warranty period. Cuts well if you can get it to work for any reasonable length of time. For ~$150, less than a year is not reasonable. New batteries are more than $100 if you can find them.
Poor design, 2Ah battery
Would Not RecommendString spool hits the guard. We either got a defective product or the only way to get this thing to work is to use it without the plastic guard. Also, this product comes with a different battery than the lawn mowers. It's only 2Ah, rather than 5Ah. Don't waste money on the version with the battery included. Buy the battery separately and make sure to get the 40V 5Ah version.
Great, simple home trimmer
Would RecommendA change in our home lawn care resulted in us needing a string trimmer. I really don't like the hassle of a gas powered trimmer, as we wouldn't use it enough to justify having a gas trimmer, fuel, etc. And I really don't enjoy dragging the extension cord around with a corded trimmer. After reading the reviews on the cordless trimmers, I decided to give this one a try, as it was well reviewed and the unit was on sale. This was a great purchase. I use this at home, and the battery life is treme...

Excellent tool for average yard
Would RecommendI bought this trimmer yesterday, assembled it according to instructions, charged the Lithium battery and went outside to do battle with weeds and ivy that was encroaching my driveway and yard. The Kobalt trimmer was surprisingly powerful and well-built and worked very well. Before purchasing the trimmer I read a few positive reviews online and I add my positive review now. This is money well spent.
GREAT PURCHASE
Would RecommendLightweight and easy to use. Very easy line replacement by way of a cartridge instead of trying to rewind the line. Automatic line feed instead of the "hit and miss" bump head. 5 year hassle free guarantee... return to the store for free replacement. WIN WIN all around. Trimmer feels and seems to be quite sturdy. I would buy this again.

Auto line feed is useless
Would Not RecommendThe auto line feed doesn't work. On the rare occasion it does, it lets out too much line and worse, it contstantly gets tangled on the spool. I finally threw it away.
disappointing
Would Not RecommendI bought this trimmer because my gas trimmer was in the shop. I thought it would make a good back up that even my wife could use. I have about 200ft of chain link fence a few trees and around the house to trim. Its about a 20-30 minute job at most. I realized that the light weight line this trimmer uses is not for chain link fence but I was surprised when on a full charge I was only able to trim one side of 150ft of fence. After the battery cooled down for about 15 minutes I was able to charge i...
Overall a nice trimmer......BUT
Would Not RecommendBought this a little over 2 years ago. It trims well, holds a good charge, recharges fairly fast - BUT - the spool cover is horrible. I am on my 4th one since I purchased this trimmer. They last about 3 months of use. Now, I do not live in a rocky area, and just use this to trim around bushes and along the driveway - can't believe it "wears out" this fast. Good luck trying to find the part in the store; and even better luck calling the 888 Helpless line. Was on hold for two hours (after 3...
DO NOT BUY THIS! I'M BEGGING YOU!
Would Not RecommendI bought this trimmer about 18 months ago. It works fine when it works. The problem is the spool end cap. This is the little flimsy piece of plastic that snaps (sort of) into the bottom of the trimmer head that prevents the spool of line from falling out. Without this end cap, you cannot use the trimmer. The spool end cap is made of extremely thin plastic and only barely snaps loosely into place. What very often happens is, as you use the trimmer, the end cap comes loose and falls out, or over t...
Very happy with this purchase
Would RecommendI bought this trimmer after looking to purchase another one that was a used/open box by a different company and chose to go with this instead after reviewing some of the feedback online. I would like to point out that my husband and I are your average homeowners...we are not running a landscaping business, and needed a trimmer for knocking back tall grasses and weeds. We are not doing any 'heavy duty' stuff yet, and if we were I would look into getting stronger trimming line. Pros: Assembly ...
