I got this to help with my riding and especially MTB adventures (pre-garmin specific MTB). I like the size to see maps with my aging eyes. I really like the climbpro feature (although could be optimized to the top of some of the common climbs). I like the touchscreen more than I thought I would and how it helps download courses/routes to help me train. I am not sure how reliable the jump/airtime features are, but the noise can be somewhat motivating, and the beep warnings provide anticipatio...

GREAT BIKE COMPUTER
I’ve been a cyclist for over 20+ years, I just don’t know how far behind the times I was with my Garmin 510. I was totally impressed with all the functions of the Garmin 1040. This is a great product for on the road or on the trail.

Great product
Amazing bike computer. Love all the features. Easy to set up and personalize. Group track is great to be able to see riding partners that are doing a different route.

Edge 1040
Unfortunately the Garmin is not available on a Mac computer desktop or the Finder. Windows has to be used to access all the folders. I do like how RWGPS files go directly to Garmin now. I love the battery longevity compared to my old Edge 530.

Not For Me
Just not my forte. To much nerd techy stuff. It was a quick return for me and back to the Wahoo side.

accessory's don't connect. If you own a smartr go p hone Strava is a better option
Doesn't connect to heart rate or cadence sensor. Cannot distinguish between gravel and pavement. frustrating to use touch screen cycles on its own map slow to update. Must be constantly resynched with phone.

Problem after problem
When it works, it’s great, but when it doesn’t….. Latest issue is the “GRADE”. My 1040 can show1% gradient while climbing 7%, or some similar disparity. GARMIN has been working on this for a couple of months with no solution to my knowledge. They did send a new device, but same problem. Maps are sometimes way off. The most common problem is the Varia Radar515 “disconnecting” while riding. Very scary when you’re used to depending on the radar. Another typical issue is the different elevati...

Too much
I purchased this for navigation as the GPS and maps are incredible. However, the actual navigation was inferior to Wahoo. Couldn’t figure out turn by turn, audio notices, and distance to waypoints prompts. Also, you lose the ability to see speed. If I needed a map this detailed, I would look at my phone. I just need the route and reliable navigation. The GPS is superior but, functionally, the Garmin does not help you navigate a course any better than Wahoo. I returned the Garmin 1040 and purchas...

Awesome bike computer
I stepped up from the Garmin Edge 530 and WOW! what an upgrade. I really like the larger screen, the touch screen and visibility of the information on the screen It has so much and you can set it up and configure it to however you ride. It syncs perfectly with the Garmin Radar rear light as well. The battery life is great and to this point, I have no complaints at all.

A Great Cycling Computer
Purchased this as an upgrade to my 1030. Found this one just as easy to use, setup and reliable.

Need to get more used to the navigation in the screens. But works great for navigation on the bike!

Disconnects radar every ride
I love it when it works and everything stays connected but sadly that seldom happens. It also is a major pain to do software updates and has a tendency to turn itself off mid ride. All in all a frustrating experience.

Good update from Edge 1030 plus
My 1030 plus decided took on water on a wet ride and had to be replaced. I got the Edge 1040 thinking it would be very similar and did not expect much difference. I was pleasantly surprised at the improvements in the unit. First thing I noticed were the icons on the data screens that make it easier to find things like elevation, grade, gears, and next turn direction (see first two screen shots). Probably the best improvement is in the Climb Pro screen (screen shot 3). Climbs are automatically d...

Easy to use.
I've had my Garmin Egde 1040 for awhile now. I love the touch features. It has great battery life, it connects easily to all my sensors and uploads quickly to Garmin Connect and all my other apps. The screen is also the perfect size for viewing a map.

Just what I was looking for
I upgraded from an older Edge 830, which is still great computer, but needed something easier to read when out riding with my daughter. We just moved to Tennessee and am completely unfamiliar with the trail system here and rely on the maps to keep us from getting lost. It has way more matrix built in than needed, but felt in the long run of things, would be the right choice. Yes, it was expensive than I wanted to spend, but so far am happy with the choice.

Nice Upgrade From My 1030
I bought the 1040 a few weeks ago when my 1030 finally gave out after 5.5 years of almost daily use. Sure the 1030 had its share of glitches. It would sometimes seize and stop recording during rides, requiring a reboot each time. I had to leave it on the charger all night, every night, otherwise it would randomly turn itself on and discharge the battery by morning. But when it worked I was happy with it so I decided to stay with Garmin where I’ve been for many years with multiple devices. So far...

Good improvement over my 820, menu system horrible
My 820 is losing battery capacity so I looked at what was available from Garmin (I am in to the Garmin ecosystem). The 1040 was a good value for me. I am impressed with the additional features over my 820. However, Garmin still fails in the menu system. They needs to get some user input and not let the coders decide how to do things. The way it is set up is illogical. Also, the default home screen is user unfriendly. I could not find a way to modify what I want on the home screen. The simplicit...
