Frequently Asked Questions
Q: In what order should you renovate a house?

- plan and design
- demolition
- framing
- rough plumbing, rough electrical and HVAC
- insulation
- drywall
- flooring
- cabinets
- appliances
- final touches: hardware, furniture, art and home decor accessories
A: It's important to have a comprehensive plan in place prior to starting a house. Here's a basic outline of the steps needed before beginning your project.
Step 1
Do your research and create a wish list. Find inspirational images to show contractors so they have clear idea of what you want.
Step 2
Create a realistic budget and plan for unexpected issues.
Step 3
Ask around for reputable contractors and get at least three quotes. Ask the contractors for references and images of projects they've completed.
Step 4
Reach out to your HOA to see if the by-laws have any restrictions pertaining to your project. Also, contact the county regarding permits. If it's a large project and you've hired a project manager, they'll typically pull the permits as part of the process.
Step 5
Once you've chosen the contractor, discuss the timeline and finalize the cost of labor materials and delivery fees.
Step 6
Are you staying in the house or temporarily moving out? If you're leaving, it's time to declutter in preparation for the renovations and make plans to move out.
Q: What's the best time of year to remodel a home?
A: It depends on the type of remodel you're doing. Fall is a great time to renovate bathrooms and kitchens. Then you'll be finished in time to welcome family and friends for the holidays.
In order to save money, winter is the best time because it's a slower time for contractors, but you'll have to contend with potential delays due to the weather. Outdoor projects are best to tackle in the spring or fall.
Q: When remodeling, should you start inside or outside?
A: The outside sets the tone for the rest of the home, so we recommend starting the exterior first for whole-home renovations. Invest in high-quality products that can withstand the elements over time, including windows, doors, roof shingles, paint and more.
However, there are other considerations. What time of year will you start? If it's in the winter, start with the interior first and finish the exterior in the spring. Is budget a big concern? Then we suggest starting in phases. If the roof is leaking, then that needs to be addressed first. If not and the kitchen is your primary concern, start there.
Renovations are costly and time-consuming, so it's important to consult with professional architects and contractors to get the best advice for your specific project.
