What Customers Are Saying
The Poulan Pro 42cc 18" gas chainsaw has mixed reviews. Some users report it performs well for occasional light-duty tasks, cutting through small to medium-sized trees and branches without issue. However, many others experienced significant problems, including difficulty starting and keeping the engine running, especially when hot, and the chain frequently coming off the bar and requiring constant tightening. The build quality is also criticized, with plastic parts prone to breaking, and several users had the saw completely fail after just a few uses. Overall, this chainsaw may be suitable for light-duty tasks, but is not recommended for heavy or frequent use.

Would Not RecommendI bought one of these from Lowe's and used it only a few times within 6 months, the chain kept jumping off, even after tightening it and then the next day after using it, I was going to use it again and it would not start. I took it back for a refund of the price of the saw and for the extended warranty. I purchased another saw with extended warranty, same model from the same Lowe's. It lasted a little longer, but the chain would not stay sharp long at all. The saw would barely cut through ha...
You will spend all the saved money on new chains
Would Not RecommendI wouldn't sell this saw on craigslist because of the karma strike I would receive. The throttle broke on the first use and after taking it apart and repairing it got a new feature of sticking in the full throttle position. While having the chainsaw stuck in full throttle would be helpful, if the blade would be even remotely oiled during operation. I would have given it one star, but it does make lots of noise, which I guess is a productive alternative to work.
Horrible
Would Not RecommendI purchased this saw 2 weeks ago to cut some small scrubby trees. It was hard to start, hard to keep running without stalling out. Tried using it again yesterday and same thing. Most strenuous thing I did the entire day was starting this chainsaw. I will be returning it today.
Bad Batch
Would Not RecommendI was deciding between the Poulan Pro and the Remington. As I only need a chainsaw a few times per year, I went with the cheaper Poulan. The chainsaw was defective right out of the box. With a lot of effort, you could get the engine to start but as soon as you touched the throttle, the engine would die. Upon taking the chainsaw back to Lowe's, Customer Service said they had a bad batch of Poulan chainsaws all with the same problem. It was disappointing that Lowe's would even sell a product t...
Great chainsaw for the price!
I just bought this today and it was really easy to start. My primary reason was so I can trim the three palm trees in my front yard. I will eventually use it to cut down some small trees in back yard that are crowding each other out. I will edit this post as I start using it more, but so far, it works great.
light weight, easy to use
Would RecommendEasy to start light weight for carrying, very happy with this product and the case is good for storage
Do Not Buy
Would Not RecommendI purchased a Poulan Pro chainsaw PP4218AVX several years ago and have had nothing but trouble with it. First, it has always been hard to start and keep running because it runs so lean and there are no adjustments on the carburetor. The toolless chain adjustment never kept the chain tight. I had to replace the side cover with the old style that has adjusting nuts. The gas cap swells due to the ethanol in gas and you must use pliers to loosen it. This is due to cheap plastic that absorbs ethano...
Very Good Chainsaw at reasonable price
Would RecommendEasy starting, cold and hot if you follow the choking directions exactly. Cuts like a charm after using a Ryobi that I returned (Home Depot) after spending 3 hours trying to get it to run without cutting out. Be sure to check your chain tension after the first time it gets good and hot, it needs to be tightened. You can buy cheaper saws but that is what you get. This is not heavy duty but good for the average homeowner. Been using chainsaws for 40 years and this is a good saw.
pure garbage
Would Not Recommendi have had this chainsaw for 2 years and it barely stays running should have return it to lowes that is on me the on off switch is screwed up does not stay in the on position you would almost tear a muscle trying to start it now i know p[eople will say its me but i have a old poulan pp4620avd or maybe it's the poulan pp4218a that starts and runs like a champ yet looks lie i put it though ww3 should have never change the design flawed it
Easy to start and operates like a charm
Would RecommendI used the chain saw to cut down a hedgerow of about 50 or more trees. Started with ease and had plenty of power to cut through some large trees. It came with sharp teeth and never had to replace or sharpen the chain. Very little vibration. Durable and easy to use. I am very glad I purchased the chainsaw. The case holds extra parts and oil.
piece of junk
Would Not RecommendI had bought one of these 2 years ago it worked well for about the 4-5 times I used it. Then it started to die out every time I gave it gas to cut. It finally quit. I took it to the repair shop they could fix it either. I called the company and they called the repair shop and sent them parts to put in and it still wouldn't run. The company replaced it with another one. I had used it all but 2 times and the same thing happened again. I wrote to Husqvarna (they manufacture Poulans) and got no retu...
Great chainsaw for the price
Would RecommendI needed a light-duty chainsaw for occasional trimming and a fence project I'm working on and this fit the bill. The price was right and had the features I was looking for, including a storage case. The first start was easy and the saw performed as expected. I did dull the chain cutting down an old stump, but it was no problem to resharpen. I gave the saw 4 stars because I've always used Stihl or Homelite in the past and this saw is not in the same class, but I would recommend it to the average ...
Great value for an excellent saw
I an into the third year with mine. I burn a wood stove and prefer Locust and cherry to burn. I cut all winter and try to have a years supply of wood ahead. I burn about 4 cords of wood per year. I am on my third chain and second bar. I bent the bar due to my own fault. This saw, with the chain sharpened properly will go through a log like it is hot butter. An excellent saw at a great value.
Poison 42cc 2-cycle Gas Chainsaw
I bought this saw 02/12/17. I cut 1 tree down and cut that into pieces. Before I was was done cutting that tree into pieces, the chain started coming off. I adjusted chain tension several times before it started this, realizing that a chain loosens up while in use. It's a chain saw ok, I spent more time adjusting and putting chain back on than I did cutting. After finally chopping up one oak, I had to put on the extra chain that came with the saw. Next, it became hard to start this saw. I'm a di...
Better than expected
Would RecommendI originally had my mind set on the Remington 20" with larger engine but when I arrived the Poulan Pro was on sale and couldnt beat the price. I just purchased 3 acres and is completely wooded with palmetto bushes, sand pine trees, and oaks. I have cut down more than 20 large trees and then cut them up for firewood. I have cut up bushes, palmettos, and vines. I have used it for hours at least three times a week for a month straight. Bottom line. It knows what it was built for. It has started eve...

Lasted three tanks
Would Not RecommendUsed the saw once in the spring and twice this fall. On fourth refill it died. Since it was so long had to try to use warranty. Took it to authorized dealer and it was denied. Said it was no lubrication. I own a farm and own mostly Stihl products, all still working off same mixed can of gas. l

Piece of junk
Would Not RecommendI have used Poulan 16" saw for years , so when the flood got my 16" I decided to try an 18" Poulan. Big mistake. This saw ran good for a short time and then lost power and quit. I couldn't get it to crank. I could find my sales list so I had a co-worker fix it. Well yesterday I tried using it again and it ran for about 30 minutes an didn't have much power. I quit and wouldn't crank, so I got my new 16" and finished the tree with not problems. I use chainsaw a lot and this saw is not for heavy us...

Good Saw for the money
Would RecommendAs a poulan pro user for the past 12 years I can say that this has been an awesome saw. It has its hiccups like all chainsaws but has been a good one for me. Runs good and cranks on about four pulls.
