What Customers Are Saying
The Poulan Pro 42cc 18" gas chainsaw has mixed reviews. Some users report it performs well for occasional light-duty tasks, cutting through small to medium-sized trees and branches without issue. However, many others experienced significant problems, including difficulty starting and keeping the engine running, especially when hot, and the chain frequently coming off the bar and requiring constant tightening. The build quality is also criticized, with plastic parts prone to breaking, and several users had the saw completely fail after just a few uses. Overall, this chainsaw may be suitable for light-duty tasks, but is not recommended for heavy or frequent use.

Would Not Recommendmy 20 year old poulan finally died, so i figured i couldn't go wrong with another. despite a lot of negative reviews i bought this one. total junk. hard to start, hard to stay running. overheats frequently in warm weather. after 4 uses, it now will not start at all. i spoke to the local authorized service dealer, and they explained poulan rarely authorizes warranty service. they blame the problem on the user, or say it looks like commercial use, thereby reducing the warranty to 60 days, no...
Pile of Junk! Won't start!
Would Not RecommendThe only reason I am giving this saw 1 star is because zero wasn't an option. I am a homeowner who needed a saw to cut wood occasionally for fireplace or to trim trees in yard. After the first use, it became increasingly difficult to keep running and was almost impossible to start. Fuel was mixed properly and I followed the instructions to the letter. Every time I used the saw it became harder and harder to keep running. I took the saw to a local saw and mower mechanic and he took one look a...

Great for debris cleanup
Would RecommendI bought this for my husband and the day after we got it we had a storm. We were able to use it to cut up a few big limbs that broke from a maple tree. Easy to use and worked well.
Stay away! Don't make same mistake! 1star=0stars
Would Not RecommendBought the chainsaw 2 years ago against my better judgement of the reviews and warnings. Huge mistake. Pull cord came apart within first two weeks of owning it. Brought it back they gave me a second chainsaw. Second saw leaked oil everywhere. Still under warranty, brought it back got a third one. Maintained the saw following the exact recommendations of the manufacturing guide. Would not run. Would not start. Always removed fuel when done for the season. Used the correct mix gas/oil. B...

Don't waste your money
Would Not RecommendI bought 1 after a hurricane, cut one tree that fell and noticed chain gear was worn. Took it back to lowes and got 2nd one, cut 4 small trees and chain gear locked up. Taking this one back and buying a different brand.

First one drive shaft... but works great.
Just a couple of notes, sharpen the chain often, get the Oregon kit, and every 2-3 tanks of gas hit the chain (watch youtube if ya need to learn how its very easy and take 4-5 minutes), helps a lot. one thing annoying is no oil window, and it runs out of oil before gas, so easy to run with out oil. I only go about 15-20 min top before topping off gas and chain oil, so I don't run it dry of chain oil. I am not super chainsaw expert put this thing will fell some trees and chop em up, clearing ....
I needed a new saw after my old "Craftsman" (made by Poulan) finally kicked the bucket after my dad and I had used it for over 20 years. I liked the Husqvarnas, but not the price. I settled on this saw even after questionable reviews; it was half the price of the husky that I liked, and my previous poulan had been a good saw. I cannot express how disappointed I was with this pile of junk. The first two hours of cutting went alright, but the saw was underpowered and would bog down in limbs as sma...

I bought a PP5020AV about a year ago. UGH
Would Not RecommendI have about 25 hours on it at least 15 of that is trying to start the blooming thing. I had to switch to $5.00 a quart fuel from Lowes any thing else and it wont start or run. The good news is that I was able to save sever hundred dollars as I quit my fitness club. My right bicep is the size of my thigh now from trying to start it. ABSOLUTELY do not buy POULAN. I have my granddads 43 year old homelight that I will have a new engine put on the thing and it will cut circles around the 5020 of c...

Would Not RecommendI have had 2 of these chainsaws. It does not want to restart if it quits on you. The fuel system sucks air in. The unit will heat up fast.

Sticks with the big boys!
I use this for back yard cleanup and really heavy duty disaster cleanup (tornadoes happen frequently around here). Use the proper gas, keep the blade sharp and it works like the expensive saws. this is the third one I've owned.
A Good Solid Little Chainsaw
Would RecommendThis saw is perfect for those around the yard chores Handled trees up to 10 inches with absolutely no problems. A bit underpowered for the 15 inch birch I cut down and sawed up, but that's to be3 expected. Starts easy, runs great.
1 star rating because there is no zero star rating
Two words; worst chainsaw. No, I was wrong, three words; worst chainsaw, ever. The nicest feature is the carrying case, because it makes it easy to throw in the trash bin. This is a poorly designed, cheap piece of junk that is not even built well enough for a casual user, unless of course, they enjoy an unreliable, fuel leaking, bar oil seive that stops working when it is needed most. If that is what you want, Poulan Pro is the chainsaw of choice. Nothing works on this piece of junk. The fuel ca...
Terrible Product
Would Not RecommendI used this saw twice in the first month I had it, and it was fine. However, it never ran again. I tried new gas, new spark plug, nothing worked. I only used premixed ethanol free gas, but that apparently did not matter, because again, it only worked for a month. Total garbage.
Chain oil
Would Not RecommendFirst day... no problem started up but after a few min of cutting I saw it wasn't dispersing the chain oil. After an hour I had to stop. Lost my recet so I can't return it. Waste of money!

Junk
Would Not RecommendSave yourself a headache and buy something else. Pure junk. Took it back.
A fine saw for occasional homeowner use
Would RecommendI've had two die but still rate three stars. The first one just died after about 15 minutes of run time never to restart. Took back to Lowes and exchanged. The second one bucked eight large oaks and felled a few more before it too died never to restart, perhaps more use than a homeowner grade chainsaw would normally see. Since it died within the two year warranty I took it in for service to be told the cylinder was scored and would not be fixed under warranty. I had used TrueFuel premixed 40:1...
Keeping the review 'REAL'!!! Good Saw for Money!
Ok guys, here's the deal. ANY product made by man has the potential to having issue. When a product has mass production you do get 'BATCHES' that are bad. This is a known issue ALL OVER THE WORLD WITH ALL TYPES OF PRODUCTS. Get used to it people.. Now, with that out of the way, I have a PP4018 that I bought Lowe MANY years back, like 8 or more. Yes there is a learning curve to 'KNOWING THE SAW YOU BUY!'. For my saw, I service everything on it and the things I have had to learn to do is lea...
Total Piece of Junk!
Would Not Recommend50/50 reviews. Thought I would take my chances. First few logs I cut, worked pretty good, and then it went down hill from there. I should have believed all the negative comments and bought something else. Everything negative that is said about this product is spot on. Sorry I could not give this saw a Zero star rating, but lowest is one star. Chain flies off, chain will not stay tight for more than a couple of logs, oiling system is horrible and does not feed oil properly, hard starting af...

Don't buy,
Would Not RecommendI received 4218a for Christmas 2016 to cut some trees in our yard. Started the saw would not run but a minute or 2 and stop. Followed manual instructions and located a authorize service 50 miles away round trip for service. They work on this for 3 days and picked up saw 50 miles round trip and still does not run. Took back to place of purchase and they gave me a replacement. Started saw, again run at idle for 3-5 minutes and stop, engine smoking (to lean) took service center 50 miles round trip...
Junk !!
Would Not RecommendGot saw on Sat 4/15/17. Filled up with gas and oil. It started ONE time. We only started saw, never cut anything with it. On Monday 4/17/17 went to start up saw and use it. Couldn't get it started. Now that saw has gas in it, you can not return to a Lowes store. Called service # for Poulan and got a local small engine repair shop to take a look at it. They were so busy, we have to leave the saw. Could be 2 to 3 weeks before they can even assess our problem. Junk!!!
