Great for yards with pets and kids

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] If you have pets or animals that like to trample through your yard...this is the seed for you. It is made to withstand high traffic and thrive in shady parts of your yard. It does not need a lot of sun to grow strong and mighty!

Easy to use!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was able to spread this on the slope of my front lawn where minimal trees are and the sun shines during the long morning hours, grass doesn't seem to want to grow there. Very informative and easy to read packaging. Here's to hoping for green grass soon! I'll have to update with pictures in a couple of weeks.

Saves a Step

Dense Shade works

works wonders on my back yard

This is an amazing product and I highly recommend it to anyone who has trouble with their grass due to no sunlight

Go on...throw shade

After spreading and watering I now have grass in the shady bits . I'm excited to spread more this year and to overspread in the hopes of having a lush yard in the future. Thank you Pennington for such a great product!!

Great seed for a shady yard

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've used this Pennington Dense Shade seed in the past and saw great results. Just purchased more to help cover a patch in our new backyard that's covered with large trees. Good problem to have, but it makes it hard to keep grass going strong. This dense shade seed helps ease that pain!

saved my lawn!!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have an area behind my house that receives little to no direct sunlight. of course, my sod there died out over a season or 2. I planted this seed (which is affordable, by the way!) and now I have no more ugly bare spots in my yard!

dense shade seed

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We have a very heavily shaded backyard. Between the sun shade mix and this dense shade mix we are able to refresh our grass in the back and front yard! It takes less water and grows pretty quick too.

So far so good....

I seeded a barren dirt area with the Dense Shade Grass Smart Seed or whatever it was called. My first mistake was to not check the weather. About 3 days later we had a TORRENTIAL downpour that completely screwed up the spacing of my seeds. Thankfully I had enough left over to reseed. Also I took the word of other commenters and both used more seed than was recommended and kept the soil WET versus damp or whatever the instructions say. Second time was a charm. 7 days later I had full germination ...

Recommend, but add a lot more seed

germination took about 6 days in dense shade, however i should have drop a lot more seed than the recommended by Pennington, and do NOT keep it moist keep it wet and you will see sprouts in few days...overall good product.

Best seed for shaded areas

I have been using this product for 2 years, and it continues to grow beautiful grass in very shaded areas. It is even growing nicely in areas that are getting 8 hours of sunlight.

It is truly designed for shade areas. So far, working great!

Barren patch of yard along northern side of house due to construction of new home next door. Sun shines over the area only 2-4 hrs a day, some spots are in total shade except 2hrs a day, other spots are in filtered sun 2hrs & then direct sun 2 hrs. Tilled the barren land, planted and watered everyday for a week. Eureka.. we had grass starting at the end of week 1, mostly in the heavy shade areas. The more sunny areas are just starting to sprout. This seed I'd definitely a winner for dense shade ...

Only seed that grew

I have three areas where grass has not grown over the last couple of years. I tried several different brands and techniques without results. Aeration with over-seeding, Thatching with over-seeding. Nothing was working. This summer I tried Pennington Smart Seed Dense shade in one of the areas, and I am cutting new grass :-) I am now going to work on a second area, and hopefully this will be as successful.

The Best Shade Grass Seed I Have Used

I've used a lot of different grass seed products on a shady lawn and none have performed as well as the Pennington Dense Shade. I have both over-seeded and spot-seeded a lawn with it. Good germination, color blended in with existing lawn... I even seeded areas during the hottest July in the northeast and the grass grew just fine.

Good product. Had no issues overseeding a large area.

About 1/2 the grass died in my front yard over the winter. Decided to try this product and fix it. Needed 4 7lb. bags of seed. De-thatched the yard. Used a starter fertilizer and raked in seed. Watered 3 times a day for 25 minutes for a month. I would guess at least 90% of the seed germinated. After 2 months of letting it grow I had to buy 1 more bag to fix a couple thin spots. Expensive seed but worth the extra money.

Works great

Half of our backyard is heavily shaded. Grass grew in quickly! Would definitely buy again.
