Would RecommendI haven't used much backer rod in my life, so I spent a long time wander around the store looking for it. It is hard when you tell somebody it is foam stuff like a rope, they take you to the pipe insulation, which isn't right. Finally found some of the material, too small, in the insulation aisle, got the "backer rod" nomenclature from that package, and then asked for 1", which was in the concrete finish aisle. The backer rod was perfect to put in a wide crack in a block wall. For a very wide crack, I used duct tape to fasten three pieces of rod together before I put caulk in the crack.

Trimmable gap filler for tighter places
Would RecommendUsed between big gap between outside wall and patio to fill gap, before applying trim and caulk. To prevent bugs and moisture. Also trimmed some lenthwise to fill a narrow gap netween door frame and wall that was a tad too deep/large for caulk alone.
