If I walked out the gate and didn't pay attention, the gate would stay open... and my dog could get out. I installed this spring, only 4 screws, and used a wrench to set the tension. Slip in the locking key, and you are done. If later you want it to have more or less tension... just pull the locking pin and adjust. Very easy. I recommend it. I bought one for the back gate too.

Would Not RecommendAs others have previously stated here, the top head popped out while testing it for the first time after installation. I only tighten the head 2 turns-maximum is 3. This could be a possible defect as the spring felt like it was under a lot of tension with just 2 turns. I have swapped out old gate springs for new ones numerous times-never encountered this problem before. Broke during installation
Would Not RecommendThe top "plug" with the hex head that is installed in the spring separated from the spring after installation. Opened the gate 3 times to test closing and it popped right out. Repaired the part that separated, and it did it again. This all happened before attempting to tension the spring. This spring is too heavy for what is needed for a reliable installation. The heavy spring does not have enough give and pulls the top "plug" right out.

Goes on HINGE side
Spring works fine but it is mounted on the hinge side of the gate. If you have a gate with nice looking, decorative hinges, bear in mind there will be this ugly spring mounted just below the upper hinge.
