I wanted to get rid of the rust, not just paint over it. I used a wire brush first and it did not really remove anything. So I tried this product. I put a fairly thick coat on and waited a little more than 5 minutes and wiped it off. I did not seem to do anything so I repeated and left it on for 15 minute...
