Build With Concrete Blocks

Concrete blocks are a useful and versatile building material. Whether you’re building a retaining wall to support an area of your yard or creating a raised garden bed, concrete cinder blocks are a reliable choice. You can even get creative and turn concrete cement blocks into colorfully painted planters.

Concrete blocks are also known as concrete masonry units (CMUs), which are standard-size rectangular building construction blocks. CMU block sizes are referenced by their nominal — not actual — thickness. Choose from various sizes, including 4 inches, 6 inches, 8 inches, 12 inches and more. The most common block used in construction is 16 inches long by 8 inches wide.

Concrete dobies are used to support rebar during the concrete hardening process. You can also find dobie blocks designed to keep welded wire at the required height as the concrete around it dries.

If you’re using large concrete blocks for your project, it’s helpful to use work gloves and a wheelbarrow to make toting the blocks easier. For laying blocks to create a retaining wall, you’ll need to lay a cement foundation below the frost line — the soil depth that frost penetrates — to support the layers of blocks you’ll be using. Also, be sure to use plenty of mortar to seal them together. Check your local building and zoning codes before you begin your project in case you need a permit.

Concrete blocks are also easy to use in smaller projects, such as creating a fire ring or a border around your flower bed or garden. Additionally, concrete decking blocks, also known as decking blocks, are a popular choice for building decks. Check out our guide How to Lay Block in 5 Easy Steps for more information.
