Kitchen Island & Open Shelving
If you're already using butcher block for your countertops, then it's a great idea to continue using them for the rest of your kitchen remodel. A matching kitchen island will tie the look altogether. They're available with heat-, stain- and scratch-resistant options. You can select from square, double radius or live edge finishes.
Typically, butcher block countertops come in a light natural finish, but there are several other styles to choose from including a dark espresso stain, a deep honey finish and even a chevron pattern. Or you can purchase unfinished pieces and stain them the color of your choice. In this kitchen, we used finger-jointed Hevea countertops in a natural color.
We also installed matching butcher block open shelving. Not only can you keep often-used items at the ready, but it's a nice finishing touch that provides a cohesive look.
If you want to add an oil or varnish to your butcher block countertops, talk to one of our Lowe's paint and stain specialists. They'll address your specific needs and ensure you use the right product.
Dining Furniture
Using your DIY skills and a few tools, you can make a custom dining table. Lowe's sells a wide variety of table legs. For modern spaces, choose from square metal bases (like the one shown), hairpin legs made of steel or contemporary wood legs. For traditional spaces, look for more ornate wooden legs with extra detailing and curves.
After you've selected the table legs, decide on the butcher block piece that you'd like. Butcher block comes in a wide variety of wood species including acacia, Hevea, teak, birch, maple and oak. Add a stain or varnish to complement your decor. And then attach the legs to the top. In this image, we used a Hevea butcher block countertop in a natural finish. Then we added upholstered linen tufted dining chairs for comfortable seating.
Follow these step-by-step instructions to make your own dining set.
Living Room Furniture
Dining room tables aren't the only type of furniture that you can make with butcher block countertops. In this case, we used the similar black metal legs as a base and topped it with an espresso-stained piece of butcher block to make a modern coffee table. Use butcher block to make matching end tables, a console table for an entryway or nightstands for a bedroom.
Laundry Room
Butcher block can be used beyond living and dining rooms. It's ideal to use in a laundry room for extra counter space. In this laundry room, it was used to surround a white farmhouse apron front sink, top a front-load washer and dryer and even have space to fold clothes, sheets and towels. Extra shelving was installed above the washer and dryer for decorative items, as well as laundry pods, clothespins and dryer sheets.
Workbench
For those that love to put their DIY skills to work, we recommend using butcher block countertops to create a workbench. A stained and sealed worktop can withstand heavy weight and usage. Some of our butcher block workbenches come with casters for easy mobility and can even be folded up when not in use.
Bathroom
Create a relaxing oasis in your bathroom. Using standard woodworking tools, butcher block countertops can be cut to suit any space. For example, in this bathroom a counter easily fit between two walls. A simple white vessel sink and a black matte wall-mount faucet are clean and modern updates. Then it's topped off with a curved oval bathroom mirror.
Cutting Board
If you have extra pieces left over from your kitchen or living space project, don't throw them away. Make them into beautiful cutting boards. Sand the edges and stain them as practical and stylish gifts for your loved ones. Add a knife set for the ultimate present for your favorite cooking enthusiast.
Office Desk
Your home office can be stylish and practical with this easy update. Add two white file cabinets and top them off with a piece of butcher block. It provides a clean and sturdy workspace you can enjoy for years to come. Wall-mounted shelving, a desk lamp and a few office accessories are all you need to get the job done.
