About Sod
Transplanting sod to change the look and feel of a patchy lawn is like giving your lawn a makeover — taking it from an ugly duckling to a beautiful swan. Once you know how to lay sod, it does take a little work on your part. In the end, that sweat equity produces a healthy lawn that you can be proud of.
The best time to install sod is early to mid-autumn. Early spring is also a good time to lay sod, but the autumn timeframe works best because the grass continues to grow during the cooler weather. As you get further into spring, the temperatures begin to get hot. This can put stress on the sod, making it difficult for the roots to properly establish which can ultimately dry the grass out.
Sod Versus Seed
Several factors determine whether you should use sod grass or grass seed when planting your lawn. Most people use grass seed, but sod replacement might be right for you if you're looking for certain qualities in your new lawn. If you don’t know how to install sod, we’ve got you covered with this helpful guide.
Cost: Sod is more expensive than seed, and the overall price of these options is usually the determining factor when choosing between the two. Buyers who choose seed can cover five to ten times as much space for a fraction of the cost.
Time: Sod produces a green lawn much faster than seed. With sod, you can have a new lawn or fix a few spots where the grass has died with a day or two of work. After two weeks of watering, a properly installed sod lawn will be rooted and ready to go. Seed takes longer to grow. Depending on the species of grass and weather conditions, seeds can take between a week to a month to begin growing and they require regular watering throughout. Once the seeds start growing, it can take several additional weeks for the grass to grow tall enough to be mowed.
Labor: Both sod and seed require work. Installing a sod lawn requires preparation, proper installation and diligent watering. Starting a lawn with grass seed also requires preparation and maintenance, but errors along the way are less expensive. The price to install sod is directly impacted by the type of sod that’s being installed. The cost of sod and installation together depends on many factors including the sod type, the size of your yard, the labor and the timing of installation (for example, during spring when demand is higher, and sod installation is more expensive).
Erosion Control: Sod resists erosion better than grass seed. Frequent, heavy rainfall during the spring, the ideal season to plant grass seed, can wash away lightweight grass seeds. This will leave your lawn looking patchy and irregular, and fixing it requires replanting. Using sod in these conditions helps ensure a thick layer of grass. Additionally, consider using sod on hills to curb erosion. If it's installed on hills with proper care, it can root in the existing soil in about two weeks.

Lawn Repair With Sod Plugs and Pieces
If you have an area to plant that's 64 square feet or less, consider using sod plugs. They're smaller, more resilient pieces of sod that'll eventually creep outward to cover the area.
To install these plugs, dig holes big enough for the plugs in a grid pattern 12 inches apart from the edges and 15 inches from the centers. Put the plugs into the holes and firmly press lawn soil over the roots. Water frequently and mow when the grass reaches at least three inches tall.
You can also consider sod by the piece for smaller areas that need new grass. Lowe's stores sell sod by the piece, so you won't have to buy a full order of 500 square feet for patch jobs.
How to Lay Sod
