Ratings & Reviews for Utilitech 15 -Amps 120-volt Indoor Programmable Digital Lighting Timer
Ratings may include incentivized customer reviews.
What Customers Are Saying
Customers are divided on this in-wall timer. Many praise its programming flexibility, accurate scheduling, backup battery, and straightforward installation once powered up. However, a substantial group reports frustrating power-up delays—ranging from 15 minutes to several hours—with some units never activating despite correct wiring. Reviewers frequently note instructions fail to mention the charging requirement, creating confusion and distrust. Those who overcome the initial hurdle find the device reliable and energy-efficient, though some experience outright failure or compatibility issues with older wiring setups.

Save the directions!
Would RecommendWorks as it should. Make sure you save the directions so you can reprogram it if you lose power.

Don’t bother
Would Not RecommendAs other reviews have stated, I bought one of these 7-day programmable light switches for a very simple, single pole porch light installation, and it never powered up. So I returned it and picked up a second switch just in case the first might have been a one-off defective in the box - same thing with the second switch - it never powered up. Don’t waste your time with this switch! It’s junk!!
3hrs to "charge up", patience helped
Funny that the 1st one had the terminals mismarked. Still got it wired up right (single pole, nothing fancy) but after 10 minutes of not working figured it was kaput so went and exchanged it. 2nd one was marked correctly. Installed it, waited 10 minutes and still nothing. Went online and saw the reviews where some had to wait several hours for it to "charge up". So found something else to do, came back a few hours later and it had "charged up". Since it's no neutral, the "charge up" time might d...
Timer never powered-up
Would Not RecommendLeft the timer wired for 9 hrs and it never powered up. Removed and replaced rocker switch following same line/load wire arrangement and all is good. There are issues with this timer as evident from other comments.
We are so sorry that this happened. This is certainly something that we did not expect to occur. We would love to have the opportunity to work with y...

Read the instructions and be patient
Would RecommendI've had this switch installed for a couple of months and it works great to keep the exterior lights on at night including across a seasonal time change to come out of daylight savings time. I understand why a lot of reviewers think the switch is DOA. I thought the same thing because nothing seemed to function with it when I first hooked it up. In the install section of the instructions, it said nothing about the switch not working until it was fully charged. That was only stated in the progra...

Instructions suck; switch is great!
Would RecommendAfter struggling with this thing for a while before I could get it to work, I just HAD to leave a review to hopefully help others. If you follow all the steps to install below it WILL work. I'm super happy with it. You can hear a very quiet little click sound when it turns on/off and I actually really love that! * Verify which wire is hot/line and connect the wires as described on the switch. * You MUST attach the ground screw. In one instance, I do not have a ground wire, but my sy...
Does not work
Would Not RecommendWired this switch correctly and tired everything possible to trouble shoot but it does not work. A complete waste of money. Was excited to find a switch the didn’t need a neutral wire.

Great Product but missing instruction step
Would RecommendThis is just the switch that I need to control the lights on the portico of my 45-year-old house. After installing it I check to make sure that there was 120vac from line to ground. The switch was completely dead. I waited 30 minutes and nothing. 45 minutes and nothing. Then I had to go run errands and when I got back 30 minutes later the switch was working. It was easy to program and hopefully it will do what I tell it to do because I'm writing this Right after installing it. It really needs to...
Bad instructions, read the reviews
Would RecommendI read the reviews after I was convined it was bad and had already put everything back the way it was . After I read the reviews, I "Hot Wired" it to a power strip and it came on in about 30 minutes. If the manual said "It may take up to 30 minutes to come on" this product would have a much higher rating and fewer returns for Lowes to deal with.
Be patient & check your ground
Would RecommendIt will take longer than 1 minute to charge the battery. With over 4 decades of electronic background, even I thought 60 seconds was way to fast to charge, so relax and check back in 30 minutes. Also, I believe this uses the ground to complete the circuit it needs to power itself, so make sure that your ground IS uninteruppted all the way back to your electrical box. Confirm by testing with 120V ac test light or AC volt meter by touching probes to hot wire (black) and also to ground. You should...

Perfect Switch for Outside Lights
Would Recommendpurchased with the need to program outside security lights and manually turn on and off as needed. Wiring was straight forward. Was a bit challenging reading the screen as a built in light would be helpful. Switch and timer worked great as programmed. Recommended

Battery has to charge before display powers up
Would RecommendI have installed several of these and for whatever reason the battery takes much longer than instructions indicate. I install and walk away and check periodically until display powers up then proceed to programing. I have not had any issues with product once operational.
Same Issues. 30 minutes and still won't turn on
Would Not RecommendLooks like I should have read the reviews prior to purchasing. I installed 3 of them and none of them will power up. Have switched the wires and waited over 30 minutes with both installation and they won't power up. Sounds like folks have had to wait longer in some cases so I will leave them a while longer and see if they come on. Nothing in the instructions talk about having to wait to come on. Thanks to all of the reviewers who put that info in their reviews. If they wind up working,...
