What Customers Are Saying
Customers overwhelmingly praise this mulch for its fine, triple-shredded texture, natural black appearance, and soil-enriching properties. Many highlight how it spreads easily, enhances flower colors, retains moisture, and breaks down into nutrient-rich soil over time. However, a growing number report recent quality decline, receiving bags filled with large wood chunks, rocks, and dirt instead of fine mulch. Despite these inconsistencies, most customers remain loyal, valuing its premium feel and long-term garden benefits.

Would RecommendI used to get 1/2 yard oak bark premium mulch and put it in 24 buckets myself. I can no longer do this. I found this mulch and like it a lot. I picked up around 20 bags different shipments this year and found no big chunks of wood or rocks in any bags. All mulch packs down and has to be turned up. It's extremely easy to do with this fine mulch. What helped tremendously is the co. put drainage holes in the bags. Before no holes these bags were sooo heavy I could only get 5 bags at a time b...
Great mulch for the price
Would RecommendI started using this mulch last year. I have not found rocks, chunks of wood or debris in any of the bags. A single bag is heavy. I turned senior and getting a half yard at the landscape store and putting it in buckets and loading is getting to be too hard for me. I do have to make many more trips getting this bagged mulch but its similar to premium mulch sold at the landscape store. I recommend it especially if you are senior like me and have to get a few bags every week. The mulch does b...
Great mulches
Would RecommendI’ve been using this mulch for years. It’s very fine so you can easily plant in it without digging out big pieces of wood.

Terrible Mulch
Would Not RecommendLike some other reviewers, I’ve been using this mulch every year for decades. Its quality has continued to decline to the point I won’t be purchasing it again and had to write this review to warn others. It was full of large chunks of painted wood scraps and rocks. The rocks weren’t pebbles, they were 2” and larger stones. I think the rocks were big enough that they had to be damaging to the processing equipment. See for yourself in the photos and know that the pieces pictured are just a sample....
This product enriches the poor soil in our area
This was recommended to me by a master gardener years ago because it decomposes and will eventually enrich the clay soil in our area. In the meantime, the mulch provides protection for our harsh winters.

Great Product
Would RecommendI have purchased this mulch for several years. It looks beautiful in my garden and I only have to replenish about every two years.

keep looking
Would Not RecommendI really liked the way this mulch looked going down. Very dark and fine. Unfortunately it is so finely ground there is no weed suppression and it washes away in any rain.
Best mulch for a pollinator garden
Would RecommendFinely ground mulch like this is much better than the cheap coarsely cut wood mulch. The color is natural so it won't wash away like the dyed stuff, and it looks great in my garden. Very natural looking and easy to spread.
Easy to work with, looks good, and does a great job of retaining soil moisture and retarding weed growth. It is more of a very dark brown rather than pitch black. It looks natural, not weirdly artificial like some coal-black mulches do.
No other good options
Have used this for several years, and like others have noticed that what was very fine black mulch is now much coarser and light brown. The “black” appearance only lasts as long as the mulch initially stays damp. Despite that this is still finer than any other bagged option, plus it is clearly not dyed which is my preference. I bought this again this year after skipping it last year, my 2019 bags were full of rocks - some larger than my fist. I suspect it was because I was buying late in the...
