What Customers Are Saying
Customers overwhelmingly praise this mulch for its fine, triple-shredded texture, natural black appearance, and soil-enriching properties. Many highlight how it spreads easily, enhances flower colors, retains moisture, and breaks down into nutrient-rich soil over time. However, a growing number report recent quality decline, receiving bags filled with large wood chunks, rocks, and dirt instead of fine mulch. Despite these inconsistencies, most customers remain loyal, valuing its premium feel and long-term garden benefits.

Would RecommendI have used this mulch for years and love it. It breaks down nice by the end of the year so I don't need to pull it out because its faded or has big chunks in it like the dyed mulch.

Mulch
Would RecommendThis seems to be the most popular mulch in our area. Lowes is always running out. Grab several bags while it was in stock and we'll use it around the flower beds and other locations. Seems to work great for the season and then breaks down over the fall and winter to become part of the soil.

Perfectly shredded
Would RecommendLove how finely this mulch is shredded. Rarely any big chunks. Looks beautiful. I do wish the bag was a little bigger.

Not ideal for mulching to keep down weed growth!
Would RecommendMulch is very small, fine pieces. Great for tidy flower beds, not great to keep weeds down.

Great organic mulch!
Would RecommendI am glad that Lowes carries the Black Forest Mulch! It is an organic triple-processed hardwood mulch that brings so many benefits the perennial plants and trees where it is applied. It is a great product for a good price that I am happy to use for my clients or at home.

Rocks and white dust
I’ve been buying this mulch for years and it used to be great but the batch this may 2026 has a ton of smashed white rock in it and I have to cover it all with new mulch.

Beware
Would Not RecommendBeware purchasing this product. The packaging looks the same but the content changes. I bought the product and spread 16 bags of black mulch. I bought 8 more. Only one bag had black mulch. The other 7 contained light brown product that really wasn't mulch.
Great mulch!
