Would RecommendIt does what a forstner bit is supposed too. They are a bit pricey but will have get some more use on it to see how well it holds it's edge.

Would RecommendUsed this bit to remove old 3/8" broken dowels from an antique table. Had no problems with the unknown wood used as dowels. Sides of hole were smooth, no tearout.
