What Customers Are Saying
Customers report mixed results with these threaded inserts. Many describe the metal as too soft and prone to cracking or stripping during installation, particularly in hardwoods, with some finding the material non-magnetic and brittle. However, a substantial group confirms the inserts work well in soft woods, particle board, and MDF when pre-drilled correctly or combined with epoxy. Success depends heavily on application type and installation method. While some praise smooth threads and functionality, others cite poor value and lack of clear installation guidance. Overall, reviewers find them suitable for specific soft-wood projects but unreliable for demanding applications.

I won't buy these again.
Would Not RecommendPoorly designed, made from soft, poor quality steel.

Useful item lacking instructions.
Would Not RecommendThe product does what it is supposed to do, provide a way to hold a threaded bolt to a piece of furniture. But the packaging is totally bereft of instructions with no mention of the appropriate drill size to insert the insert nut, and no mention of the size of allen wrench you need to use to insert it. There is nothing on the manufacturer's website either. Totally unsatisfactory. The metal used to make the insert nut is weak and the allen wrench can easily break the nuts hexagonal recess, ma...

Softwood good. Hardwood bad.
Would RecommendGreat product in softwood, but I tried to use them in hardwooods. In cherry or jatoba (which I was using) they tend to fall apart.

False Description - Hillman Confirmed Liars
Would Not RecommendA few seconds under a propane torch and it melted. These are cast zinc, not any kind of steel. Hillman is lying about their products.

False Description - Cast Zinc, not Steel
Would Not RecommendThese are not steel, but just cast zinc. I had 2 of them break trying to drive them in to particle board. I got a magnet and tested it, and guess what? NOT MAGNETIC AT ALL! These are cast pot metal and the description is a lie. Go ahead, check it with a magnet. Later I will check the melting temperature to verify.

Poor quality
Would Not RecommendDrilled a 3/8” pilot hole into walnut sapwood. Seems to be plenty wide for these nuts as it’s slightly wider than the wide end (hex) of the insert. 3 of then stripped out before they were in all the way. This was my second attempt using these and I was extremely careful when screwing them im. Going to try to find something made out of better steel. This stuff is garbage.

Work well, but hex head can strip
When you install these be sure to drill the hole sufficiently wide. This is because if you do not you can round out the hex head on them, making installing them very difficult. However, once installed, they work very well at retaining furniture bolts.

IT'S OK FOR SOFTWOODS
Would Not RecommendThese are great for MDF and maybe Pine but if you're using hardwood BEWARE. The metal is soft and they will crack or the allen wrench will strip out and then you have too use an extractor to remove.
