What Customers Are Saying
Customers overwhelmingly praise these stainless steel screws for exceptional corrosion resistance and strength in outdoor applications like coastal decks and marine environments. Most highlight reliable performance in harsh, wet conditions without rusting or tarnishing over time. Many appreciate the self-tapping design and compatibility with impact drivers, noting they drive smoothly without pre-drilling. However, a notable minority report frequent head stripping, particularly with the T25 Torx drive, with some experiencing 30% failure rates before full installation. Despite these quality inconsistencies, most customers consider them dependable for demanding outdoor projects.

Would RecommendI like them because they are stainless steel. I like the size for 5/4 decking as opposed to a # 8. They are a bit soft so you really have to keep firm downward pressure when screwing them in otherwise the head will strip out and that’s a real pain extracting it if that happens. Still by using firm pressure and after getting a “feel” for them, I only had to discard a few-about 3%.

Lose thread very easily and do not drive in well.
Would Not RecommendI recently made a raised bed with the other deck screws and had no problem. These have their own star head and come with the drill bit. I was using them for pressure treated wood and fir- pretty soft. They would lose their thread no matter how slow I drove them. Tried drilling hole first and still had trouble at the last bet of it. Such a waste!!!
10% heads strip out
Would Not RecommendAfter using a 5 Lb box of these screws, found about 10% heads stripped out. All holes were predrilled so there shouldn't be that much stress. Use a 2nd box from another manufacture and had no problems. Having to go back through and replace that many screws took much more time than installing them.

Soft, low-grade stainless
Would Not RecommendWith the provided star bit, most of the screws stripped during installation **into pre-drilled holes**. I used an 18V Bosch drill/driver on the slow setting. The filings that stripped off are magnetic, indicating a low-grade of SS. These are supposedly rated for self-drilling installation but my troubles were in much lighter-duty installation, as I drilled pilot holes in the Trex I was installing. I'm returning these and going back to a good quality coated screw.

T25 Star Heads Stripped
Would Not RecommendOut of a box of 79, 11 stripped while using the suppied bit. Many others I got to sink in when they were stripping and I doubt I will ever get those out. They are junk.

High Performance Stainless Steel Screws
Would RecommendIt is great to use stainless steel screws for corrosion resistance, but in the past it has been challenging because they were somewhat brittle and would break if they hit something like a really tough knot or another screw. Hillman has solved this! The attached photo shows a screw that hit a bolt, tried to go past it, bent and I was still able to back it out. Go Hillman Stainless! These are the tough screws you need to get the job done.
Worst Deck Screw Ever
Would Not RecommendThis screw uses Torx T25 bit rather than the T20 used by the competition in this #8 screw size. The T25 head is very shallow and the bit cams out very easily! The T20 allows for a deeper socket without cam out. My advice is to look for some other brand with a T20 head - you'll be way less frustrated. I'd return this rubbish if I could.

Must pre-drill - heads snap off too easily
Would Not RecommendAs others have noted the heads snap off far too easily. I was putting them in treated 2x4 onto 2x10 joists. Even when pre drilling we snapped a lot of heads. I rarely see this in coated screws. Won't buy again

I will never buy these again.
Would Not RecommendNeeded to beef up the frame of a old deck to get ready for new composite deck boards. I found that the old frame had some rot and a lot of nails had rusted away.... I used these screws thinking that the stainless steel would never rust away like the former fasteners. About one out of three would strip out half way into the old pressure treated wood. Yes I know that pressure treated wood gets really hard with age and these rafters and such are a good 25 years old. When I say stripping out, I'm...

Good screw, Must do SS in beach area, many strippe
Would RecommendGood screws, these do better than the 1 inch which all seem to strip with star bit. These go it without pilot drilling. Have also used 3 1/2 inch which is good for beach environment.
