Out of date printer cartridges
The color cartridges that came with the printer were out of date and had to be replaced by Brothers. The printer won’t print in black and white unless all the color cartridges are operational.

I have never had a problem with this printer. It does both sides of my papers beautifully. I am impressed. Faxes have always gone through. My only isseu at the moment is the paper stop on the paper tray that stops copies from going on floor broke. I do feel it broke way to easy.

What a Shakedown!
Bought this printer after its 10-year-old predecessor locked up after an update. I quizzed reps at Brother in two calls before purchasing this model on whether non-genuine ink could be used. They said "yes." Fast forward 3 months, after I refilled the starter cartridges provided and fired up the machine. All sorts of error codes popped up, and the printer wouldn't recognize its own original cartridges. The error codes could not be cleared and the machine would not function. Called Brother again ...

Ink use
never print in color, yet I the red and yellow cartridges are empty and I can't print anything until they are replaced. Other than that I like the printer. I plugged my laptop into it and pressed the print button on my laptop and it started printing. I didn't have to set anything up. That's what I call a smart printer.

Easy and Quick from the Start
This MFC-J1170DW was easy to set up, integrated itself seamlessly in terms of connection, and has been totally dependable from the start. The instructions coming from the printer are clear -- no fancy flashing color codes and obscure website-based actions. It's fast and no-nonsense. A perfect little office printer.
