Worked well

The directions were easy to understand. I had no issues using the test kit.

Chemicals provided are poor quality (Nitrogen)

I tested several soils and composts and this test showed none of them had any nitrogen. As a test, I also tested spent coffee grounds, 5-1-1 fertilizer, and urine. All are high in N. Yet, this test showed none of them had much N. I suspect the N test chemicals are of poor quality. This test kit isn't dated, so I don't know its age.

Nitrogen test failure x5 tries

I'm a PhD chemist, so I know how to do this stuff. I tested 3 media: undisturbed soil, mushroom compost, and 'leaf" compost. None of the media showed significant Nitrogen (i.e., low or very low N). P and K worked okay. I repeated the test twice for the compost samples. Suspecting test failure, I added several drops of 5% N, 1%P, and 1%K fish fertilizer to the test tube. Still no N detected. This kit was very easy to use. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an inexpensive, easy-to-use kit. It had good pictorial references which made it very easy to determine quickly, the condition of my garden soil.

I found the test kit very easy to use. I would recommend using it if you only wanted to know if the soil was acidic or not. For a more detailed result, send soil to get tested by professionals.

Defective! - shows low N,K,P in store-bought soil

I followed directions attentively and got the result that all four soil samples were very low in N, K and P. I got suspicious and tried testing new Miracle Gro soil from the store. This soil showed good Nitrogen, but basically no K or P. So I think the test is a dud.

Easy to use

I wish I had tested my soil years ago and kept up with proper management. I'm doing it now after 27 years and can see a difference. The test kit has good instructions and is easy to use. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of only a small complaint. The test chemicals come in small capsules that are hard to open. be prepared to loose a little chemical. To help, open the capsule over a sheet of paper to catch and spillage and then fold it over to funnel the chemical into the test tube.

pH works - the rest are suspect. Poor results.

The pH test works and was validated as accurate. The remainder of the tests were suspect at best. Two tests on the same samples showed different results, and the results listing are a complete mess. Ounces per 100 sq ft of some % of N P K is unusable. It should be pounds per 1000 sq ft of N P K, not some % that requires a ton of math to find. I want to know how many pounds of 100% nitrogen is needed to correct the soil, and then adjust that based on my N P K ratings on my fertilizer (e.g. ne...

After seven years tending to a 16'x16' plot in a community garden, and never testing the soil, I decided it was about time. Online I found this simple "beginner's" kit offered by Lowe's. I feel confident it resulted in showing what I needed to know to improve the quality of my planting milieu. Save your money

Where do I begin? The tubes are very small making it difficult to get the soil and chemicals in without losing half of the chems. The capsules DO NOT Open, you have to cut them, spilling some of the contents. None of my samples synched up with the color charts. I now know as much abpout my soil as I did before. Am returning this useless trash. Only gave it a 1 because you can't say 0.

Soil Test Kit

Results were exactly what I expected for my lawn. Good product. I'm happy. I made a small "funnel" out of a piece of 2" x 2" aluminum foil. Separate the capsule and dump the powder onto the foil. Easy to hit the mouth of a tube with this funnel.

easy test, need better recommendations

THis kit has supplies to perform 10 tests each of Ph N P K. You get four graduated test tubes with color coded caps that match the colors of the capsules containing the test chemicals. Dont let your kid or pet eat a capsule. One capsule per test, only thing to measure is the water. Also get a dropper. Deceptive Claim

THe packaege claims magerial for 20. Tests. Only 10 capsules for PH test. For the other tests you have to cut the capsules in half. Reslly?

I can't get the nitrogen test to show color even under a high-nitrogen controlled condition.

soil test kits don't work

Kit didn't accurately test my soil compared to a test from a soil test lab. They helped me spot the problem with my soil and this kit was worthless.

False readings compared to ext office- time waster

If you want to play around (like a 5-yr old) then this toy is for you. If you care about finding your lawn's pH and soil nutrients, this is a horrible kit to use. Because it gives wrong results, I ended up: 1) Adding unecessary nutrients (that my lawn already has plenty of) and actually doing damage (even burning plants) 2) Wasted lots of time and money By the way, avoid taking soil samples to local nursuries - they use cheap/unreliable testers and staff do not even know how to use.
