Ratings & Reviews for Pennington Black Oil Sunflower Classic Wild Bird Seed 40-lb
Ratings may include incentivized customer reviews.
What Customers Are Saying
Customers overwhelmingly praise this bird seed for attracting cardinals, finches, blue jays, and other species that return frequently and consume it eagerly. Many highlight the appeal of sunflower seeds and peanuts in the mix. However, a notable group expresses frustration with increased filler seeds like milo and wheat that birds discard, viewing this as a formula decline. Some feel the product is overpriced given uneaten seed waste. Despite these concerns, most customers consider it a reliable choice that delivers strong bird activity and satisfaction.

Would Not RecommendThe Wild Bird seed is so full of stems and other filler that my birds are confused. They don't know whether to eat it or build a nest with it. Your quality has REALLY gone downhill. I have bought your products for many years but, no more.

I am seriously thinking of changing to another brand
Would RecommendIn a a bird feeder. Used your classic bird seed for 4 or 5 years. The last 2 or 3 bags I got have had alot of stems and seeds still in the stems which clogs up my feeder, also there is corn in the mixture which is not suppose to be there. I will recommend this product if ya'll clean up your product.

to much millet/Milo now again peanuts
Would Not Recommendcalled company about month ago, peanuts in bird seed. Lady said she would tell plant to stop with the peanuts. This bag out of different batch, still peanuts in it. When you run one type seed, clean every thing out before the next batch or hire better help next time. Clean the peanuts up and get five stars.

Corn in the seed & it brings RATS to your yard!!!
Would Not RecommendCorn brings rats! Nowhere in the description of the bird seed does it say corn is an ingredient! It's obvious your company is all about quantity versus quality! I will not buy from you again!

The bag was full of millet/milo seed .
Would Not RecommendThe birds avoid this product like the plague . It is full of tiny millet or milo seed which apparently are hard to digest.. I have english sparrows, carolina wrens, red birds, blue jays , mocking birds, squirrels thrashers, black birds etc.

Wat to much Milo.
Would Not RecommendThis bird seed is full of Milo. Milo is a filler. The birds here do not eat Milo so it is wasted. Look up Milo for yourself, it's nothing but a filler. Big waste of money.

Dissatisfied
Would Not RecommendDissatisfied, more and more filler, like twigs, shells, change in ratio of seeds birds will eat. Waste of money. I had been using product for years, and have noticed the 'fillers', but it has gotten worse, and the seed products are different.

Large plastic pieces and rocks in latest bag
Would Not RecommendI buy the classic bird food every winter. Have never had this problem before. When I opened the 20# bag to fill my feeder for the first time this winter I was surprised to find a large piece of blue plastic. Thought - ok this hasn't happened before so I discarded the plastic and filled the feeder. Next time I filled the feeder go another large piece of blue plastic, micro plastic pieces and a large stone. Now when I fill the feeder, I pour the seed over to a pan to pick out the plastic before I ...

Filler beads
Would Not RecommendThose small orange beads must be filler material because the birds or squirrels don't eat it.

Best Value
Would RecommendIf you have several feeders this product is a great value. It is not as clean as the high end feed but we go through a lot of seed so it what we use. The birds do throw some on the ground but it is eaten by the ground feeding birds.Never any seed on the ground at days end.

Birds and squirrels love it!
Would RecommendMy second time using this particular strain. Cardinals, Jays, Doves, Titmice and Wrens flock to it and within minutes 2 lbs are almost gone. Not to mention the hawk-dodging sqirrels gorging on the goodies. I cant personally vouch for the quality of the blend but my yard wildlife seems to enjoy it. Would definitely buy this product again.

Trash
Would Not RecommendI have been buying your Classic Blend for 15 years. Bags may have a little trash in them but it has been acceptable. The last bag was at least 50% trash, including straw, wood chips, and peanut shells and other things. I will certainly examine the bag before I buy from now on.

Not happy with the Classic Wild Bird feed.
Would Not RecommendIn mid summer we use up to 20 lbs. of bird feed a week. We have used this product for several years but it has several negative things about it. First there are several types of seeds in it that our birds don't like. The birds throw them out and they end up piled up on the ground under the feeders. Secondly, there is some kind of seed that when it spouts out looks like grass. It even sprouts out in the bird feeders if any moisture happens to get to it from wind blown rain. Then we have to empty ...

Classic Wildbird Feed
Would Not RecommendThought I would purchase some quality Pennington Bird seed instead of the normal generic bird feed only to find through-out the bag there are wood pieces, so each time when filling the feeder I have to sift through scoop before placing into feeder and empty feeder of the small sticks before refilling, Disappointed product contains so many sticks when I thought I was purchasing bird feed,
