Materials for Building Sturdy Deck Stairs

Whether you're building a new deck or porch or renovating an existing one, well-built stairs are an important feature. Wooden deck stairs are easily coordinated with wooden deck boards by matching the wood type and stain or painting them. Composite deck stairs can give you the look of wood while being resistant to rotting and mildew.

When building stairs, there are a few components you'll need. The stair stringer supports the individual steps and determines the size and angle of the stairs. Risers close the vertical gap between the steps. You'll also need treads, the part of the stair that you walk on. A steel stringer connector is a great option for securing your stairs as it supports the treads and risers.

If you're building a deck with wrap-around stairs, you can build corner deck stairs by placing a stair stringer in the corner at a 45-degree angle where your treads and risers will meet. The rise of the stringer should be the same as the others, while the run — the distance from the top of the deck to the end of the lowest step — should be 1.414 times longer.
