What is a prehung interior door, and when should you use one?

A prehung interior door is a slab door already attached to a frame with hinges, often including casing and predrilled holes for the handle. It’s ideal for new construction, damaged frames or major remodels where you want a straight, square opening and smoother installation.

Are prehung interior doors easier to install than slab doors?

Prehung interior doors are usually easier to install because the door, hinges and frame are factory aligned. You still need to level the unit, shim the jambs and fasten it securely, but you avoid mortising hinges or cutting the slab to fit an existing frame.

How do you measure for a prehung interior door replacement?

To measure for a prehung interior door, remove the interior casing and measure the existing frame: width between jambs, height from floor to underside of head jamb, and wall thickness. Match the rough opening size, door swing direction and door style to ensure a proper fit.

What is the difference between left-hand and right-hand prehung interior doors?

The difference between left-hand and right-hand prehung interior doors is the hinge and handle placement. Stand on the side where the door swings toward you: if hinges are on the left it’s left-hand, if hinges are on the right it’s right-hand. Match this to your room layout.
