Living Room Furniture
Sofas
For many, the living room is the most used area in the home, so it's important to pick the right furniture for it. This white linen sofa with down-blend cushions provides a plush and comfy landing spot. The cushions are reversible and the covers are removable.
Ottomans
In the room image, they used a striped fabric ottoman as their coffee table. Our upholstered ottoman with hidden storage is functional and stylish. Keep blankets tucked away when not in use. Add a tray on top to hold your drinks and have the remote nearby.
Poufs
We also recommend using these striped cotton poufs. Add a tray on top and use them as end tables or as extra seating when guests come over. We carry a wide variety of colorful and patterned poufs made of cotton, faux leather, jute and wool.
Rugs & Flooring
Rugs
When you have a room that's decorated in a white and neutral palette, it's important to incorporate different textures. It'll make them room feel layered and inviting. An easy way of doing this is by adding a natural fiber rug. They're made of jute, sisal or seagrass. Most of the natural fiber rugs that you see are in a taupe or caramel color. But these thick hand-woven rugs are also available in a wide range of colors including off-white, black, navy, pink, yellow and more.
Size is also an important factor. As a general rule, you'll want the front legs of your furniture to sit on the rug. Learn more about selecting the perfect rug for your home.
Hardwood Flooring
Hardwood flooring is a classic, durable choice that you can enjoy for decades to come. If you want something similar to the what's shown in the room image, we recommend solid red oak flooring in a butterscotch finish. This flooring is low maintenance, while easily withstanding everyday traffic. Learn more about picking the best hardwoods for your home.
Paint
White walls and a door trimmed in black doesn't sound like a tall order, but picking paint colors can be tricky. Paint colors can vary vastly depending on the amount of natural light, lightbulbs and the objects that are in the room. Here are some recommendations.
White Paint Colors
- Cuddle Down by Valspar: It's a cool, white hue.
- Du Jour by Valspar: This is a clean, crisp, neutral white.
- Pure White by HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams: This is a bright and versatile white. It's a designer favorite because it has a very slight yellow undertone that prevents it from looking too stark.
Black Paint Colors
- Tricorn Black by HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams: This is a designer favorite because it's a fully saturated black, creating a sophisticated backdrop.
- Caviar by HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams: This is a traditional black paint that has some warmth to it.
- Victorian Dusk by Valspar: This is a black paint color that has a touch of green it in.
Pottery
If you have a set of bookcases, a console table or a fireplace mantle, this is the perfect opportunity to show off your favorite objects. This is also a good place to inject some color into your otherwise neutral space. In this living room, they used books, artwork and numerous pieces of pottery to line the back bookcases. They focused on earth tones and then added in pops of pale pink and burnt orange.
Lowe's has very similar pieces that you can add to your own room. Starting from the top left, we have an off-white modern stoneware vase with a face on the front. On the top right, this pine wood circular vase set has a modern organic feel.
On the bottom left, these fun glazed ceramic vases in a burnt orange finish inject color and personality into a space. Finally, this taupe and white pitcher looks great on its own or filled with flowers or greenery.
It's always good to mix up different textures to create some visual interest. Warm woods, wicker, ceramics and stoneware work well together. When grouping items on a shelf, use pieces in different heights and tones.
Lighting
In this living room, burnished brass picture lighting and wall sconces provides a warm and welcoming touch.
Picture Lights
Traditionally, picture lights are placed over an individual piece of art to highlight it, but they look great over these bookcases. They'd also work well with several lights over a gallery wall. Picture lights are available hardwired, plug-in or battery-operated. Some lights are dimmable and come in several finishes to match your decor including matte black, oil-rubbed bronze, brass and nickel.
Wall Sconces
In the living room, they hung these simple mid-century wall sconces on either side of the window seat. These modern lights in brushed brass with opal globe glass shades would work well in a living room, dining room or either side of a bed. Wall sconces are typically available hardwired. If you don't have an existing sconce to replace, there are plug-in or battery-operated lights.
Mirrors
In the last few years, round gold mirrors have been front and center in home decor. They look great in living rooms, bedrooms and entryways. Add a gold mirror that tilts, is lighted and anti-fog to your powder room or bathroom.

Artwork
In the featured living room, there are small landscape and sketch figures that can be found on the bookcase shelves. Landscapes in neutral colors and black and white drawings have a minimalist and modern feel that work well with the other objects scattered throughout.
Whether your style is coastal, traditional, transitional or modern, Lowe's has thousands of pieces of wall art and decor to choose from.
