Creating the Border
This is a simple project that’s perfect for a beginning do-it-yourselfer (DIYer), gardener or landscaper. Depending on the size of the area you’re edging, you can complete a stone edging project in just a couple of hours.
Edging with stones lets you give your landscape a defined, finished look, and you can choose from stones in a variety of colors and styles. Straight edging stones look great defining walkways and other straight edges while curved edging stones create fluid, natural-looking designs defining tree rings and winding pathways.
For durable designs that are resistant to warping and deterioration, choose concrete edging. You’ll have a higher initial cost, and it’ll be more labor-intensive, but it’s more stable and long lasting. On the other hand, polyethylene edging is affordable, it’s easy to install and it’s flexible and you can create curved shapes.

Create the Border with Edging Stones
Creating a border with edging stones is an easy project. Don't feel limited to straight lines; design curves for your own unique look. Take your time as you work your way through the project and don't rush yourself. Rushing may lead to mistakes. Once you've finished, you can be proud of the wonderful borders you created.
Step 1: Mark the Edging Layout
Measure and mark your project area. You can simply mark an area along the edge of an existing planting bed or landscape feature or you can use a garden hose, rope or marking paint to create a custom layout.
Before beginning any excavation, call 811 to check for underground utilities.
Step 2: Dig a Trench for the Edging Stones
Using a shovel, dig a trench along the area you marked. The trench should be roughly 2 inches to 3 inches deep, depending on your edging stones. Keep the loose earth nearby. You’ll use it to fill in around your edging stones when you finish the project.
Step 3: Add a Base for the Stones
Add leveling sand to your trench and compact it with a tamper. The sand will create a stable base for the stones and make it easy to adjust and level them.
Step 4: Add the Edging Stones
Place the edging stones in the trench. Use a long level to check for level. On curved sections, you can use a torpedo level. Add sand to raise the stones or use a rubber mallet to tap the stones down as needed.
Step 5: Fill in the Gaps
Fill in any open spaces with the loose earth to secure the edging stones.
