Download the Advent Board Layout Guide or make your own design. Lightly draw a center line parallel with the long edge of the board using a soft lead pencil. Mark out three progressively larger triangles and an 11-inch x 3-inch rectangle for the trunk.
Lay strips of different colors of electrical tape across the triangles and trunk, altering the angle and spacing slightly as you like. Leave the corners and edges of the pencil marks exposed as much as possible while overlapping the lines with tape.
Use a straightedge and a crafts knife or utility knife with a fresh blade to carefully cut through the tape where it crosses the pencil lines. Remove the surplus tape outside the triangles and trunk.
Wrap the lids of 25 small gift boxes in the colors of your choice. (We used red and green papers for 24 lids and gold for the lid of the box at the top of the tree.) Place the wrapped lids on the boxes.
Cut a piece of double-sided tape, apply it to the bottom of a box, and attach it to the tree shape. Repeat for the remaining 24 boxes.
You can leave the boxes as they are, or use a permanent marker to label the boxes from 1 through 25.
Inside each box, place a small gift, candy, note, or other Christmas surprise.
