Have a variety of food available to attract birds of all types. Here's a guide to what types of feed and feeders birds enjoy when cool weather comes.

Cardinal

Food: Sunflower seed, safflower seeds, seed mixes, and fruit

Feeder: Use flat or platform feeders and hopper feeders set near dense shrubs or small trees; Cardinals also will eat from the ground

 

 

Woodpecker

Food: Suet, sunflower seed, nuts, and berries

Feeder: Try suet feeders, tube feeders, and occasionally a nectar feeder; place in tree-filled residential

Finch

Food: Nyjer seed, thistle seed, finch blends, and sunflower seed

Feeder: Tube feeders and ground feeders

Bluejay

Food: Peanuts, acorns, sunflower seed, and cracked corn

Feeder: Hopper and platform feeders; jays will also snatch food off the ground
