Cover the Ground You Need

Have a big landscaping project on your to-do list that requires filling in natural areas with mulch or soil? With the Lowe’s Mulch and Soil Calculator, figuring out exactly how much you need for the allotted space is easy. We’ll also help you understand the benefits to each, so you get the right product for your project.

Types of Mulch
Whether you’re looking for something that reduces weed growth, helps with erosion, insulates the soil, enhances curb appeal or all of the above, mulch is an ideal candidate. Adding a layer of mulch to your flower bed or other natural area instantly creates a barrier that makes it hard for weeds to find their way in, block sunlight and slow growth. It also keeps soil from washing away, protects root systems from harsh temperatures and retains moisture for the plants growing under it, all while enhancing the look of your outdoor space.

There are two types of mulch to choose from: organic and inorganic. Organic options include wood mulch with varieties like cedar mulch, cypress mulch and hardwood mulch. Both a positive and negative aspect of wood mulch is that it decomposes. While it does feed your soil rich nutrients, it also breaks down over time, so you’ll need to make sure it’s replenished to maintain the look and other advantages it brings to your yard. Wood mulch comes in different colors, so you can pick the one that works best with your landscape. Pine bark, pine needles and straw are also available to use as organic ground cover.

Inorganic mulch comes in the form of rubber mulch as well as brick, pebble or stone. These still offer weed reduction and moisture retention, but they stay in place better than organic choices. Since they don’t decompose, however, they don’t provide any nutritional value for your soil.

Types of Soil
There are three main types of soil, each offering different qualities: clay soil, sandy soil and loam. Each type consists of layers, including top soil, which is the most nutrient-rich part and of top concern to gardeners. Having the right soil in your garden or landscape improves your chances of successful plantings. You’ll most likely need to add soil amendments, like Miracle-Gro Soil, to create the ideal growing environment. If you’re planting in containers, use potting soil to ensure healthy growth.

Soil and mulch prices vary depending on the type you choose and the area you’re covering. Standard-size bagged mulch typically blankets 6 square feet, so buying it in this format is good for smaller areas. For larger lawn projects, consider bulk mulch to save money and trips to the store. Soil can be bought by the bag and, where available, in bulk.
