How Much Siding Do I Need?

Vinyl siding is a popular exterior siding choice for residential homes and multi-unit complexes. This is due to vinyl siding materials costs being one of the more economical of house siding prices, along with the durability and lasting good looks vinyl siding provides.

Vinyl siding comes in 100-square foot units called squares. Squares are made up of wall panels. Our siding calculator can help you determine and estimate vinyl siding squares you may need and also help evaluate your vinyl siding cost. It is suggested that you add 10% to the total to account for any waste in trimming and installing your panels.

7-Step Measurement Guide

This calculator is to be used as an estimating tool only.

Sketch Outlines

Draw a separate sketch for each side of the house.

Measure Sides

Measure the height and width of each side. Multiply height by width to get that side's surface area in square feet. Add side measurements and enter them here.

Measure Additional Areas

Measure gables, dormers and any other areas not included in the sides. For each triangle-shaped area, measure from the base to the top, then multiply this measurement by half the base length. Add these measurements and enter them here.

Measure Windows and Doors

Measure the width and height of windows, doors and any other areas that will not be covered with siding. Multiply height by width for each area and add to get total square footage not covered with siding. Enter this total square footage here.

Steps 2 and 3 have been added together, and Step 4 has been subtracted from this sum. Ten percent (10%) has been added as a safety measure, to cover any waste from trimming and minor miscalculations.
