Input length, width and desired R-value of the area you’re insulating. Click the button to calculate the depth (in inches) and pounds of total insulation necessary for this job. Get information on R-values below.
This calculator is to be used as an estimating tool only.
R-value tells you how well insulation prevents heat moving from one space to another. R-value is also a factor in the depth of blown-in insulation you need.
The United States Department of Energy recommends R-values based on your location in the US. Match your region on the map to the chart below. Keep in mind:
Insulation is available in many forms and for many applications. Once you know the R-value you need, shop for blown in insulation or other types of insulation for your space.

Estimate Your Blown-In Insulation Project
The key to success for any project is in the preparation. Budgeting for materials is a major component of the process. Use our Blown-In Insulation Calculator to determine the amount of materials you need to complete your insulation project.
Cellulose or Fiberglass?
Which blown-in option is best for you? There are advantages to both. Fiberglass blown-in insulation, a great noise insulator made primarily of glass fragments, is cost-effective, long-lasting, nonflammable and moisture-resistant. Cellulose insulation is made from recycled materials, like newspaper and wood fragments, that are shredded so they’ll bind together. Fire and insect retardants are added for safety. Cellulose is environmentally friendly and fills cavities well due to its bulk, but it tends to settle more than fiberglass.
Estimating Needed Amounts
We’ve made it easy to estimate the amount of blown-in insulation you need with our Insulation Calculator. Measure the length and width of your room and input the R-value best for your area of the country.
