Ratings & Reviews for Zinsser BIN Interior/Exterior Multi-purpose Shellac Wall and Ceiling Primer ( Spray can )
Ratings may include incentivized customer reviews.
What Customers Are Saying
Customers overwhelmingly praise the exceptional stain-blocking performance and rapid drying time, with most reporting outstanding results on water stains, smoke damage, and knots in a single coat. Many appreciate its versatility across MDF, drywall, wood, and metal surfaces, plus its lack of strong odor. However, a notable group expresses frustration with defective spray cans—malfunctioning nozzles and inconsistent spray patterns render some units unusable. Despite this reliability issue, most customers consider the product highly effective when functioning properly and worth the investment for superior coverage and efficiency.

Would RecommendThe pro: this product dries within 15 minutes and is the perfect solution for stains that bleed through paint, such as pine knots. It also works very well to coat torn wallboard prior to joint compounding Sheetrock thereby avoiding bubbling. The quick drying is great to keep the work flowing. The product works equivalently to Zinser 123 in coating glossy painted surfaces prior to either paint or joint compound/taping, thereby avoiding poor tape adhesion. The con: this stuff is 2x more costly tha...

Just Buy It! You won't be sorry you did.
Would RecommendNo joke, this product is amazing! I had ceiling water stains, stains from rusted drywall nails, some grease splatters, and drywall brown paper showing from previous paint chips and over sanding. I went with the spray can because the ceiling are textured. In one coat B•I•N out performed 3 coats of a high end nationally known roll on primer. My advice is to use B•I•N for any stain and be careful applying it. The product will run and give hangers if your not careful. Definitely money well spent!
Spraying is horrible
Would Not RecommendThis stuff was horrible. The spray is coarse and spits droplets as fast as you can spray. Wiping the nozzle doesn't help since it drips again in a few seconds. I bought 5 cans... all the same, all going back to the store. Don't bother listening to the company spokesman at the end of the reviews because they KNOW its bad but are paid to offer sympathy.
Great Product
Would RecommendCovers well; high cost is tough, but high coverage makes it work it.

VERY little coverage; uneven. Ruined a cabinet.
Would Not RecommendEven with the Rust-oleum $9 easy-on-hand attachment, this expensive spray didn't even cover the outside of a 48"x12"x16" cabinet. Does not spray evenly within a distance of two feet. I read enough complaints to know to shake furiously and upside down. A waste of $12. I cannot recommend this for ANY project.... other than perhaps small drawer pulls.

Works on just about any surface
Would RecommendI have used this on wood, stained wallboard, stained ceilings and even rocks and it has worked great every single time. Be aware that, once dry, it is very hard to remove from just about any surface. Clean-up is easy with household ammonia first and then soap and water.

Not a smith application
Would Not RecommendDid not come out of the can smooth. Impossible to get the top off without breaking the nozzle (this happened to both cans I purchased)

Defective spray can
Would Not RecommendNormally a good brand, this product was unusable due to what may be a defective spray nozzle. I used more air clearing the blockage than I did spraying primer. Used up all of the air while I still had 1/3 of the paint left. Very disappointing
Something is amiss here! It sounds like the nozzle was clogged. Inside each can of Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-based Primer is a dip tube that p...
