Total crap.

Followed instructions to the t. Some sparse spots came up and the rest crapped out. Looked at other's reviews and it seems that most had the same experience I had.

I would buy this product again. Will it spread?

I live in Austin TX. I have some shaded areas in my backyard that are just dirt. I decided to try Smart Seed Dense Shade Mixture. I prepared the soil by using a manual push pole aerator to loosen the soil. I dampened the soil, and ran the aerator over the area 4 days in a row to make sure the soil was very loose, several inches deep. I used my Scotts spreader and then carefully raked the soil to embed the grass seed. I watered it in and made sure the soil remined damp. I also made sure there was...

Not impressed

Two week in and nothing. Rakes, applied the seed, additional top soil, and water daily. Nothing but a higher water bill.

Sprouts so fast!

I created an entirely new lawn, 1-3 inches of topsoil and spread this seed. My lawn gets 2 hours of sunlight maybe! And i have pine trees, this stuff grew like weeds!! Highly recommend. Just curious when I am supposed to mow... (approaching my second week growth)

Dense Shade Grass Seed

I live in Houston, and I couldn't get grass to grow underneath my oak trees. After looking at the different types of seeds, I decided upon the dense shade seed because it was about the only seed that could grow down here with minimal sun. I planted mid March and it sprouted and was doing well till the heat of summer was upon us. In just a few days of mid 90's it stopped growing, turned brown, and shriveled up. Quick sprouting

I would not recommend this product.

I rototilled, mixed in a 10-10-10 fertilizer, seeded and then covered with 1/8inch of top soil. I have kept the seed wet and the first 4 inches of my soil wet for 3 weeks now and have had no growth. I recommend a different grass seed as this seed does not work.

Came Up Well

Planted in shade under trimmed pine trees. Came up well within 2 weeks. Thin blades. Uniform dark green Will need to plant more to fill-in bare spots.

Very dissatisfied with Pennington Deep Shade Grass Seed

Works, if you use it correctly and look past the negatives

This seed did an awesome job at germinating, and is filling in 100% bare patches quite nicely! Now, we'll see how well it tolerates having ~3 hours of sun, as advertised. The fertilizer coating is awful. Green powder coated everything and everyone involved in spreading this stuff. But, if you look past it, it works. As always, when I look through reviews of grass seed, I see a lot of dissatisfied people, because they weren't experienced at successfully growing grass from seed. Makes it hard to f...

Starting to grow

It's been several months since I applied this product. I did give it 1 star. I would like change that to 3.5 stars. The grass is starting to fill in. I'm not sure why it took so long. We have had several heavy rains and wind. Not sure if maybe it was washed away or blown away. Still far from perfect but now I'm seeing progress.

Nice fertilizer

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We used this in our backyard along our fence line where there's no grass. We have a 6 foot wood fence and our dogs like to run the perimeter therefore leaving that area very sparse of grass. It took some time but we now have grass growing in there! I'm excited! It's going to look so much better!

No grow for me

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was given a bag of Pennington Smart Seed Dense Shade Mix to try. I spred it out in an area which gets little sun. The only thing that came up was weeds. I patiently am waiting for grass to grow. It's been almost 3 weeks. Not impressed at this point.

Easy to use

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We live in Michigan so we had a late start in getting seed planted. This was easy to use - covered with topsoil and kept moist. Grass has already sprouted in less than 2 weeks.

A quality grass seed

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] In a stroke of good timing, shortly after receiving this Dense Shade mix from Pennington just a couple weeks before my back deck was removed (due to structural issues). This left a huge dirt patch in an area of my yard that is mostly shaded by the house. The grass had a bright green color to it. Good patching seads

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We have quite a big lawn and of course some dead spots appears every spring. I was able to get this pack to try it out and it looks like pretty solid product. Main point - majority of seeds actually sprouted and covered those dead areas. For now it all looks good. This is a main part of this product. I will definitely be back next spring if needed for more.

Finally grass under my tree!!!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have an area that I haven't been able to get grass to grow. It only gets sun for about half hour in the early morning. The rest of the time it is completely covered by a very thick beech tree. I had almost gave up on it, then after trying the Pennington dense shade mix I was finally able to get good looking grass under the tree. I have tried multiple different "shade" mixes this is the first one that worked. Thank you Pennington!
