I ended up with blisters and a very tired set of arms but manually digging out a mature tree's roots isn't for the fait of heart no matter what manual tool you are using. It doesn't slice through thick roots like a hot knife in butter, but it will hack away at them until you can do more damage with a saw or clippers. What it is great for are those big taprooted weeds that are almost impossible to pull.
