What Customers Are Saying
Most customers praise this product as an effective mulch and soil amendment, noting it retains moisture, suppresses weeds, and improves plant growth at an affordable price. However, many express disappointment that it resembles shredded wood chips rather than true compost, with a dark, earthy texture. Despite this mislabeling concern, reviewers consistently highlight its value and practical utility in flower beds, raised gardens, and as a soil conditioner. Several users report using it successfully for years, accepting its composition as a worthwhile trade-off for cost-effectiveness. Overall, most customers recommend it when expectations align with its actual performance as mulch rather than finished compost.

Would Not RecommendEven though this is compost, the chunks of wood in the product were quite large and had to be removed before it could be used. Was very disappointed.

In a pinch
Would RecommendI've used this stuff for years and its great whenever I don't have enough of my own compost. I just wish the bags were a little thicker. However, the compost is well mulched, spreads easy and mixes well into the soil.

Mulch not compost
Would Not RecommendThis is described as 100% organic compost! but it's nothing but a bag of wood chips(mulch)The wood chips weren't even close to being composted . I would not recommend this product to anyone wanting to use it as compost, but as wood chips or mulch it wood be a great value at 2.87 a bag for 2cft.

Well-performing product at the right price
Would RecommendThis compost works well in my vegetable garden & flower beds to help give them a start whenever I put in new plants. The price is right as well.

Good For Mulch but not much else
Would RecommendI use this stuff as mulch around my vegetable plants mainly to keep fruit off the ground or rain splashing up. How I can tell this stuff is low quality is when I make compost tea from MY compost it froths like crazy, but this stuff just barely bubbles. As mulch or a side dressing it's great.
Perfect for my turtle pen and plants
Would RecommendI have used this hapi-gro organic compost for at least 2 years. I have 16 turtles and this organic mixture is perfect for them. It's easy for them to bury into. I pile straw on top and they hibernate in the cool/cold nights. I've never had problems with weed seeds sprouting in the mixture either. I also use this organic compost for my plants, mixed with potting soil or to protect the fragile plant stalks for winter. I am really pleased with this product. It makes me, my plants and my turtles hap...

looked like red cedar mulch...chopped up
Would Not RecommendI was disappointed that it was not a true compost. It looked like red cedar mulch cut up into small pieces. No dirt or resemblance to compost or dirt with wood chips in it. Poor example for a compost. As I said. It is not.

Great Product
Would RecommendThis compost is more broken down than any other I have tried in the last few years. The wood in it is small and easily crumbles. I could tell that there is a good amount of leaf mould in it which is so good for plants. I can't say how happy I am to see a compost for sale that is comparable to a good home made compost slowly matured for a couple of years. This stuff is more broken down and composted than the miracle grow potting soil I bought as a last minute filler for my garden last year. It ha...
OK, it's not actually compost, but still useful
Would RecommendAs other reviewers have noted, this doesn't meet the definition of actual compost. It's finely ground "forest products" (pine bark or something like that). To be compost, this stuff would have actually had to be decomposed at some point in its history. That is not the case here. With that in mind, it makes excellent soil amendment for Blackland Prairie clay dirt, of which we have an abundance where I live. It improves drainage. As it decomposes, it acts as a slow fertilizer. I can't tell yet w...

Claims to be compost
Would Not RecommendBought 5 bags of this product with plans on using it as soil for garden beds I just made. After I emptied the bags into the beds it didn't look like very good soil. I tried wetting it down and the water just ran off of it, Had to work it with a shovel while adding water just to get it wet. After trying to get it wet I realized it was nothing more than wood ships and sawdust, not composted at all. It would be fine for using as a mulch but not for "compost" as soil. I'll be going somewhere else to...
Great value for the product
Would RecommendI work it in with Top Soil when I plant flowers, shrubs, and trees, then I add appropriate fertilizer. Outstanding compost product to get things started.

Perfect for areas of standing water
Would RecommendI have a poorly drained area outside the French doors off my bedroom. I've never been able to let my dogs out of that door because there's always a puddle. I filled the holes with this compost and its like a sponge. Soaks up the water and prevents mud and Mosquitos.
This is not the same stuff anymore
Would Not RecommendThe Organic compost is no longer offered at my Lowes, yet i was allowed to purchase it online and then go pay more in-store for the mushroom compost by the same brand. The SKU for the Hapigro compost is the SAME as another brand now, and this product is no longer being stocked. Too bad, it was some of the best compost I had seen in a big-box store for a while. I ended up with the Hapigro mushroom compost which is turned out to be mostly sand and didn't incorporate into my beds very well. The mus...

Great!
Would RecommendI was disappointed at first when I saw fine chips instead of aged compost. I thought that the chips would leach-out all the nitrogen from the surrounding soil...but was totally surprised when my garden took off like never before. This stuff is great but would be a lot better to mix w/ another amendment like cow manure. The fine chips break very easily so I guess they're decomposed enought to add a balance in Nitrogen. This product is better than other stuff that is priced 4 times as much.
Think outside the box
Would RecommendAs many reviews have stated, this is all fine wood chips, I mean fine. I LOVE this product mixed with peat hummus and some regular soil it is nutrient rich. I use these fine chips under the actual mulch, it is a slow feeding living mulch, works great and the price cant be beat, this stuff makes impatients and other annuals sing in blooms, and acts as a great pot mulch in the winter! I always use this!
Stay far away, all woodchips
Would Not RecommendStay far away, all woodchips, except I did find some paper and what looked like a few 3" pieces it Styrofoam cup in there. I just purchased their other organic compost yesterday and will review that one for you by June 17th, 2012. Seriously stay away from.this one, you would be better off using Humus or even colored wet bagged mulch over this stuff, my peppers have had a couple months in this and this compost dramatically stunted their growth after the roots passed through the top layer of potti...
