What Customers Are Saying
Most customers praise this product as an effective mulch and soil amendment, noting it retains moisture, suppresses weeds, and improves plant growth at an affordable price. However, many express disappointment that it resembles shredded wood chips rather than true compost, with a dark, earthy texture. Despite this mislabeling concern, reviewers consistently highlight its value and practical utility in flower beds, raised gardens, and as a soil conditioner. Several users report using it successfully for years, accepting its composition as a worthwhile trade-off for cost-effectiveness. Overall, most customers recommend it when expectations align with its actual performance as mulch rather than finished compost.

this is mostly a mulch product, very little compost, not good for my vegetables.
Citrus soil mix
Would RecommendBark fines worked great for fast draining citrus soil mix after adding perlite.
THIS IS NOT COMPOST!
Would Not RecommendI am so upset. I bought four bags of what is labeled as "compost", but this is NOT compost! It is mulch!!! Do you know how bad it is to mix mulch into the soil? It actually robs the nitrogen from the soil so that the plants can't access it. Mulch should NEVER be tilled into the soil the way that compost is. Remove this product from your shelves. A total SHAM.

Not compost
Would Recommendits a excellent mulch but not a compost. I like this product for a fine mulch but wood chips are not composted.

Not Compost
Would Not RecommendJust like several other people, I personally would not consider this as compost. I'm running low on homemade compost so I bought this product.. It would be a fantastic mulch.. But in my opinion it is definitely not composted. I'm going to put it in my worm beds and use it as mulch.. Also it would be great to mix it in my compost, because it is very finely ground up, and use it next year lol...
Not compost
Would Not RecommendThis is a misleading product. It may have “some” compost in the mix, but it is mostly mulch with a lot of big chunks. It may be good as a top layer in raised gardens or to mulch around bigger plants. Not ideal as a growing soil.

Not completely composted
Would Not RecommendVery affordable, but the material in the product was hardly decomposed at all. This product would be excellent if it was completely composted.

This is not compost!
Would Not RecommendIt might have a little compost in it, but it is 95% wood chips. False advertising.

Good smelling compost
Would RecommendJust filled my raised garden Had good quantity and no dirty stones etc And smelled good too!
Not actual compost
Would Not RecommendThis isn’t compost, this is mulch. So much large organic matter that by the time it all breaks down your gonna have no nitrogen left over in the soil for whatever you’re growing. Terrible for beds and especially terrible for starters.

Good stuff!
Would RecommendI have been using this compost for several years. I use it in my flower beds, raised vegetable beds, and various other vegetable and flower containers. I like it because it loosens the soil in my flower beds, as well as the mix in my raised beds and containers. The bark fines decompose in the beds and containers helping to enrich the soil with nutrients.
Better than mulch
Would RecommendGlad Lowes is still carrying this product. It works great, is easy to handle and goes much farther than typical mulch, plus it has nutrients that actually help the trees and plants you put it around. Have been using this for several years now and even though it is much finer than mulch it settles great after a season, but not a hard cover, still is easy to rake and blow with very little movement. Just a great product. Thanks Lowes.
Perfect for a Mulch
Would RecommendThis product seems to be perfect to use as a mulch over ones garden. I have used it to create a nice covering for the soil of my vegetable garden as a mulch and it has performed wonderfully. I am not sure as using it as a traditional compost as it seems to be only part of what a traditional soil like compost would be. I wouldn't plant in it alone or consider it as a soil as it is not wholly soil like. I think it is a perfect mulch and I have added some additional wood chips on top of it to add...
BARK COMPOST
Would RecommendI love, love, love this stuff. It is almost impossible to find composted bark mulch in this area (Texas). If you can find It, it is outrageously expensive. This product is very fine(bark fines)and keeps the soil loose. Bark contains many nutrients that wood mulch does not contain and it does not deplete the soil of vital nitrogen. Great product.
Slightly Composted Mulch
Would Not RecommendI bought this product to use as an ingredient in my potting mix. Because it was wet from a recent rain, it looked much darker and more rich than it turned out to be. I should have listened to my intuition because the wood chips within it were much larger than expected and only partially decomposed. After a few weeks without new growth, stated noticing yellowing leaves on my seedlings. I new immediately that they were suffering from a nitrogen deficiency and that the wood chips were tying up all ...
Buy during 'off months'.
Would RecommendDepending on where you live(big city or no so big)and the time of year, you may get very small and very thin wood chips. HOWEVER, if you watch the deliveries during 'off months' you will find pallets of actual BLACK, very good compost. I live in a city just under 200,000. At the end of last month and early this month I have gotten bags of really high quality compost. I'm stocking up for next March. Not to mention, the contents in the bags will continue to break down(if just a little)until next M...
NOT for use on your lawn
Would Not RecommendDo NOT use as a top dressing for your lawn - unless you want bark chips all over your yard. Now I will have to rake up all the wood chips - extra unnecessary work and a waste of money spent on this "organic compost." The bag states it can be used "FOR OLD LAWNS As a top dressing spread 1/4 inch thick & rake lightly into lawn." It should also state that it is full of wood chips! I am very disappointed in Lowe's for selling this product!
good compost but packaged poorly.
Would Recommendyou often leave your compost ,mulch etc. where it gets wet (due to weather etc.) . this makes it hard to handle and a mess to use. pretty good compost though. if i found some other brand or vendor that was packaged and kept dry i would buy it instead.
