Ratings & Reviews for CANTEX Polycarbonate Old work Switch/Outlet Electrical Box
Ratings may include incentivized customer reviews.
What Customers Are Saying
Customers overwhelmingly praise this electrical box for its reliability and ease of installation, particularly for old-work remodels in homes without existing boxes. Most highlight how simple and fast installation is, noting it requires no studs and fits securely in drywall with a helpful template. Many commend its suitability for retrofitting older homes and replacing outdated boxes. However, several reviewers consistently report issues with included screws that strip easily and wing tabs that break during tightening, prompting some to use their own hardware. Despite these hardware concerns, most customers find the box functional and worth purchasing again.

Would RecommendSturdy and good size box, ideal for installations where several wires are housed in one box. The only drawback is the length of the screws on the little flaps. Works great on drywall, the grip is a little tight when used in siding, the screws barely grab the back of the wood board.

Would RecommendSturdy and doesn’t break like the ones at the orange store. We got more to replace the other ones that had broken.

Old work box that works
Would RecommendGood old work outlet to add lighting in older houses. Wouldn’t recommend putting a heavy light on them but a simple flush mount is no issue.

Quick & easy to use.
Would RecommendWe are in a 6 year old house and one night heard a crash !! The builder's housing popped out of the bathroom wall. Found this replacement at Lowes, quick and easy repair!

Ok, other brands screwed in easier.
Would Not RecommendScrews were hard to screw in when up in ceiling. After hand starting screws for several turns before putting in ceiling they worked better. I almost returned and was going with other brand but figured my work around seemed to be helping

Works OK. Need to be creative in hole cutting.
Would RecommendA good sturdy box but the reason for 4 starts is that they will not just pop in a perfect round hole. The fingers hang off to the side as well as the overall shape makes it require trimming to an already round hole.
Difficult to use.
Would Not RecommendBox is okay but the screws are so tight the screw heads strip out. I ended up removing the screws, applying some lubricant, screwed them well in then backed them off for final use. At that point they worked well.

Takes a custom fit to be tight
Sturdy and fairly easy to install. I like to have a very tight fit instead of a perfect circle with gaps. This box is a little harder to install for that application. I start with a small hole for the base of the box and as I push it into the drywall, I customize the hole to fit the tabs as tight as possible.
